Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Thumb sucking

DD is 5 months 2 weeks and is a serious thumb sucker.  I am turning to the moms of slightly older babies to see if there is hope that she may grow out of this phase.  Aer there any moms out there whose LO was sucking their thumb a lot and is now just not that interested?

I know I shouldnt worry about it too much, that she is little and that this will not be an issue for many years to come, however I am still a bit worried.  Her thumbsucking goes beyond self soothing.  She pretty much sucks on it the majority of her waking hours.

Any stories/anecdotes you may want to share with me?

  • Our older daughter was like this.  She's 3 and still sucks it.  The dr and dentist have both told me not to worry untul she's 4 so I'm not.

  • DS sucks his thumb a little bit, but he also sort of chews on it too (he's working on getting a tooth!) so I'm not worried about it. I figure if it becomes an issue when he's older, we'll deal with it then.

  • we trained DS to take a nuk. I figure it is easier to take away a pacifier than his thumb. plus it was his hands in his mouth all the time and I was trying to lessen the amount of slobber and germ passing by using a nuk.
