Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Almost 12 month old will not drink milk (from bottle or sippy) - weaning help needed!

Hi -

I started weaning my daughter at around 11 months. I wanted to transition slowly and hopefully have her completely weaned by 12-12.5 months.  She has been EBF since birth and has never been a big fan of the bottle. The only time she has taken a bottle is when she is with a sitter for 3 days a week when I am at work. And that sometimes is even a struggle.

So I decided that I would wean her onto a sippy cup and bypass the bottle completely since she has never been particularly attached to the bottle anyway. When I started weaning, I removed one nursing session at a time. So I went from 4 sessions/day down to 3 sessions/day and now down to only 2 nursing sessions/day (first thing in the morning and right before she goes to bed).

She seems to be doing fine with this transition but the one major problem we are having is she will NOT drink any MILK (except for when she nurses)!!  She eats really well (and loves dairy - cheese and yogurt) and will drink a ton of water but will not drink breastmilk or WCM.   Now that we are down to only 2 nursing sessions/day I am concerned that when I remove these last 2 she will not get enough milk in her diet.  Should I be concerned?  How can I encourage her to drink milk?  Or should I not worry about the milk as long as she eats well and drinks water?

  • I was in the same boat almost exactly. All you can really do is keep offering it to her and she should eventually start drinking it. That's what happened in my case. Took about 23 weeks. As long as you're offering lots of yogurt, cheese etc she should

  • Exactly what PP have said. I talked about it with our dr at the 18 month appointment (I had just weined) and she was not at all concerned about it. She said there are enough other sources of calcium and she didn't care where he got it from. LO loves yogur

  • It took our LO a week... we went cold turkey on taking away formula and the bottle. The first couple days were rough, but once he realized that's what he was getting he was fine. Now he looks forward to "baba" time! It can be a rough transition, but as PP
