Ergo Infant Insert

I've been reading about the infant insert, and some people said they didn't get this and just use a towel instead. I bought my Ergo today, but will need to order the infant insert online. Is this a must if I want to try using it right away? TIA.

I don't know about using something else, but I just went ahead and got the infant insert.  I used it today for the first time and it worked really well.

The purpose of the insert is to fill out the carrier so that a newborn is held upright and doesn't slump.  It also boosts baby up so that baby's head isn't down in the carrier (the top should come no higher than the midline of baby's ear).  You

We had one gifted to us with the Ergo, and used it as soon as LO hit 7lbs.

I loved it, honestly. And I popped out the little bottom piece to use when LO got too big for the whole insert, but was still too small for the Ergo alone.

Speaking of the insert. LO is over 14 lbs but is only 8.5 weeks old. He is overflowing out of the insert. I'm not sure if he can go in the ergo without it yet as he's still quite young. He holds his head up pretty well.
