Natural Birth

Now I'm scared, at least a little

My first two babies were born with all labor in hospital and with help of an epidural but neither were very good experiences.  My current youngest will be 7 on 4/22.  I was injured badly in 2008 and due to the spinal cord damage I am no longer eligible for epidurals for safety reasons.   My midwife said they can do some IV drugs if I reach a point where I need it. I really thought I could handle a natural labor, no problem.  With all the pain and recovery time involved in my injury my pain tolerance is high. But yesterday I went into preterm later and got a taste of natural labor without the mind or butt numbing drugs and ouch!

Has anyone here had a natural delivery already and how do you really get through it?  I want to at least try as everything I've heard and read says it will be better for me and for recovery time afterwards.

  • Not sure how far along you are, but have you considered taking a class and/or hiring a doula?  I did Hypnobirthing twice and had a wonderful experience.

  • It can be done. The big thing is to tell yourself that this pain is only temporary.  Each contraction is a minute and there is rest time in between.  You can do anything for 1 minute! Also remember that each contraction brings you closer to meet
  • I had a natural delivery and even though it was an atypically fast birth, I am 100% convinced that it was the removal of fear from the event that made it possible. The most valuable fact I got out of my prep reading on birth was: security/safety/happiness
