Special Needs

"New" diagnosis

By way of background, my DS is 3.5 yrs old, hard-of-hearing (wears hearing aids), and has hypoplasia of the corpus callosum and microcephaly.  Developmentally he is doing really well, except he doesn't want to be potty trained (his drs have recommended putting him in underwear so he feels wet).

DS had his neurology visit today (he goes every 6 months), and the neurologist  indicated she believes DS has ADHD.  I suspected this, based on his energy level, tendency to be impulsive (sometimes grabbing for things, hugging friends repeatedly), and because he seems to have a hard time sitting still for tasks hat don't interest him (like speech therapy at home).  He is in preschool (it's a total communication class for deaf and hard of hearing children), and his teacher reports that he often fidgets in his seat and needs re-direction "a bit more than is typical."

The neurologist did not recommend medication at this point, since his behavior isn't interfering with learning.  When I asked about therapy, she felt he was getting structure at school and did not suggest any other therapy. She said we will have an ongoing conversation about medication when he gets to kindie, where he will be expected to do more tasks he may not want to.  She also told me I didn't need to take him to a developmental pedi unless his behaviors became difficult to manage later on.

I'd love some input from those of you with experience. Are there any therapies to try?  What kind of behavior therapy can I look for?

I guess I just feel a bit lost, even though I told myself I knew this was coming.
