Can we talk about Barbies?

DD got a beach Barbie for Easter from DH's aunt or cousin or someone, and I think she looks like a skank.  It's DD's first Barbie and maybe I just haven't looked at a Barbie up close in a long time, but dang.  She's got eyes like a Bratz doll, the pink streaks in her giant hair and is wearing next to nothing.  I'm by no means a prude, but I was kind of clutching my pearls as I was looking at this thing the other night.  My, how Barbie has changed, huh?  And have her proportions gotten even more skewed than they used to be?  Girl has got some legs.

Also, Barbie is not made as well as she used to be.  When I was a kid, Barbies were solid, and if I recall correctly, you could bend their legs (though, the more I think about this, maybe you weren't "supposed to" be able to bend their legs, we just did).  This girl feels as cheap as she looks - I think I could maybe break her leg in half with my bare hands. I certainly don't think she could keep up with the GI Joes and Ewoks she hung out with in my playground.

I'm not going to take it away from DD or anything as ridiculous as that.  She can play with it all she wants, but I don't think I'll be buying her any Barbies anytime soon.

Re: Can we talk about Barbies?

  • I've bought a few Barbies in the past couple years and it takes me forever to find one that I feel ok about giving to a young girl.  I buy the doctor or the vet but even those are pushing it on the sexy level.

    Don't get me started o

  • I loved my barbies growing up but yeah they're completely unproportionate. I'm sure it's even worse now.

You could always bend their knees, it's no good they're cheaping out on them now. Little hands are rough on toys.

  • I did buy a Barbie for my niece not this past Christmas, but the one before.  I'm pretty sure I got her the engineer or architect or something like that.  I think she even came with a hard hat!

And I also had a million Barbies growing u

  • I had a million Barbies growing up, and L has several. She is not totally into them yet.

My experience with current Barbies, is if the have something to do with water, like a beach Barbie, they are made differently to be in the water.

  • B already has two Barbies. They haven't been taken out of the box because they are the Christmas Barbies with the really elaborate dresses. I loved Barbies when I was little, but I don't think they're an appropriate toy for an 18mo.

  • I liked the series they had years ago, where each one was a princess from a foreign land. Sure, they still had Barbie's impossible measurements, but they were covered up, and somewhat educational.
