Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Tantrums already???

Hopefully you ladies have some insight!  DS will be one next week.  Lately he has developed kind of a little attitude that has me scared that it will get worse.  Example: If he is playing with something and I take it away (like a cell phone or something that he's not allowed to have) he will scream.  I mean SCREAM.  He'll get angry and start grabbing for whatever I took.  I know it's normal for him to be upset, I guess, but this seems to be bordering on tantrum.  I will not give him back whatever it is, but I do try to distract him with something he can have, and that will calm him down after a minute.  Anyone else had their LOs do this?  Do you think I have intense temper tantrums to look forward to as he gets older?  TIA!!  :)

  • Sounds totally normal to me, your LO doesn't get why he can't play with your cell phone and it is new/lights up/fun!!! So you take it away and he's upset, since he doesn't have the ability to say "Hey! I was playing with that!!!" he screams.

  • Sounds about right.  DD (19 months) really started trying to exert her independence when she turned 1.  The best thing that worked for us is exactly what you are doing, distract and redirect to something else.

  • DD never had tantrums at this age.  I always wondered about what otehr moms were talking about.  DS on the other hand began having tantrums a couple months ago.  He will throw himself down and kick or arch about in your arms.  It's cra

  • I don't know if I'd call what DD does tantrums, but she does cry when I take her away from something. Generally speaking, I only do it if it's dangerous, so I don't give in, and I'm hoping that over time she comes to understand me when I tell her there's
