Lucia, NN Lucy?

We like the name Lucy, but I've been thinking that Lucia, nn Lucy/Luci may give DD more name options as she ages. We like it pronounced "loo-SEE-ah," as my DH is hispanic and that's the only way he's actually heard it. (Versus "loo-CHEE-ah"  or "loo-SHA") I also think it makes a cute sibset--Maya and Lucia.

Do you think it will set DD up for a lifetime of correcting the pronunciation or is "Loo-SEE-ah" a pretty common pronunciation? Oh and for the NN, should it be "Luci" or "Lucy"? Thanks!

Re: Lucia, NN Lucy?

  • I automatically thought Loo-SHA but I'm not sure of another way to spell it for how you want to pronounce it. I think Luci and Lucy are both cute. I'd go either way.

We thought about Lucia but decided in just Lucy.

  • I definitely think you will run into a lot of people pronouncing it loo-sha. Lucia is a very pretty name but Lucy really isn't any shorter so I don't see the need for the NN. Plus, Lucy is a perfectly nice/adult full name. It's not something that reads ni

  • I like Lucia and I like the nn Lucy, but when I see the name, I pronounce it Loo-Chee-ah. It's our next door neighbor's name and she pronounces it that way because she is Spanish, so that is how I have always pronounced it too.

  • I liked this name, too. Was a Spanish major so I also was thinking "LooSEEah". I think it's beautiful and I liked the cute NN. DH wasn't on board.

As far as going with Lucia vs. just Lucy, I'm a fan of having a longer more formal name with a NN

  • I would pronounce it Lucia (loo-see-ah), but there are more Spanish speakers in my area than those that would pronounce it loo-chee-ah or loo-sha. I imagine Seattle is pretty similar to Portland in that respect.

I would use the Lucy spelling for

  • Since your Dh had a Spanish background Lucia makes sense and people will get used to it. I contemplated this same exact question but since we are neither Italian nor Spanish it didn't make sense. So if we ever have a girl she will just be Lucy. GL!

  • We chose Lucia for our baby girl, nickname "Luz". I am Hispanic and DH and I have always loved the name. I think the pronunciation issue depends a lot on where you live. We live in a heavily Hispanic populated community, so I'm guessing most people will p
