CT /MRI /X-Rays

We have an appt with an ortho today because Chris's PT wants us to have his legs checked out ... again because he in-toes.  We've seen the ortho several times and he's always told us that this will resolve itself in time and he was right about his bow legs - they're straight now, however the PT will not give it up.

(the doc had some choice words about how PTs are just trying to cover their butts by laying any future "blame" on a child's doctor when they know perfectly well that certain conditions auto-resolve and don't need actual treatment)

So we're taking him again but our usual ortho is no longer w/ the hospital so it'll be a new person.  On the off chance that an xray or CT/MRI is ordered, how can we help Chris cope with the procedure?  It just occurred to me that he's old enough for any one of these but has never actually had one.

Thanks

Usually Radiology departments have MRI safe music devices and headphones so the patient can listen to music. Does he like music?

  • He does.  I'm just afraid he won't stay still.

  • Chances are a CT/MRI (and most likely MRI bc CT has radiation) would be scheduled, and he would be sedated.  For an x-ray they would generally do this in house, depending on the office, and you would be able to stay with him and wear a vest most like
DD1(4):VSD & PFO (Closed!), Prenatal stroke, Mild CP, Delayed pyloric opening/reflux, Brachycephaly & Plagiocephaly, Sacral lipoma, Tethered spinal cord, Compound heterozygous MTHFR, Neurogenic bladder, Urinary retention & dyssynergia, incomplete emptying, enlarged Bladder with Poor Muscle Tone, EDS-Type 3. Mito-Disorder has been mentioned

DD2(2.5): Late term premie due to PTL, low fluid & IUGR, Reflux, delayed visual maturation, compound heteroygous MTHFR, PFAPA, Bilateral kidney reflux, Transient hypogammaglobulinemia, EDS-Type 3

  • I think he'd be sedated for anything that he had to stay still for.  Joey had an MRI at a little over 3.5 and they sedated him.. wasn't even a question.  X-rays I think you just have to grin and bare it for however long it takes.

  • Thank you everyone for the suggestions. Fortunately no such procedure us required. We went to a different doctor and were afraid we'd hear we'd been wrong for the last two years but no he asked if it was a grandparent who had voiced a concern. We said PT
