Would you leave the house with the oven on?

I roast chickens by putting them in the oven at 250 degrees all day long (usually about 6 hours is good). I don't really have to tend to it at all except maybe baste it a little bit towards the end right before eating- otherwise, the chicken just slowly cooks all day on it's on and I don't even check on it much.

I have to go pick ds up from school. Would you feel comfortable leaving it in the oven just long enough to go pick him up and get back home?

Re: Would you leave the house with the oven on?

  • Yes, wouldn't it be the same as leaving the house with the crockpot on?

  • I wouldn't. I think a nestie (Mitch's mom) house burned down for that very reason. I know my mom's kitchen caught fire last year b/c of that. I wouldn't do it.

  • yes?

It isn't like you're going out of town for the weekend..I don't know..I am not a very good cook, or someon who cooks very much at all..so... huh...I think I would leave it on.

Unless you have a sketchy oven, or chicken is very flammable (is it? I don't know?)

  • Please tell me it's not one of your fluffy chickens.

  • I've done that before, but it always makes me soooo nervous.

We used to live less than a mile to the grocery store. One time I left with a burner on (trying to boil a big pot of water). I was a nervous wreck but for some reason I really had to get it done right then. I'm sure it'll be fine.

  • If the oven is on 250, I would be fine with it.  If it was at 400, I would probably not do it.

  • I would for a short trip like that but I wouldn't plan to be gone for more than 30 - 60 minutes tops.  I would also take the dog with me just in case.  But I'm paranoid like that.  I also rarely leave the house with the dryer running.
  • I would turn the oven off and leave the chicken in there. If you're really gone just a short time, it will stay warm, and then you can turn it back on when you're home.
  • Depends. ?Is it Gas or electric? ?Growing up we had an electric stove and we used the time bake feature all of the time with no problems, but there also was no flame. ?Now that I have a gas stove with a flame inside I would never leave it on without me here.

  • Absolutely. Even if it caught on fire, it woudl be contained within the oven.

It would not be safe to go with something on the stove, the the oven is perfectly safe.

Not true. My mom's oven caught on fire and it caused the stove to explode and the kitchen burned.
