BCBS Durable Medical Equipment

I just talked to a person at Blue Cross Blue Shield of IL and we'd be able to get an electric breast pump through a Durable Medical Equipment supplier on their list, and it go towards our deductible, which I know we'll definitely hit throughout the pregnancy and birth.

Has anyone had any luck finding a DME supplier that has breast pumps?  I keep clicking on all of the links, but none seem to have breast pumps...just like scooters and sleep apnea and those types of equipment.

Any advice would be great!

Re: BCBS Durable Medical Equipment

  • I have BCBS PPO+ and I think I'm going to order from Mark Drug Medical Supply.  They have a good selection of pumps (i.e. Medela) and Frank, the guy I've been emailing with has been very helpful with insurance questions.

I asked BCBS for a list of all of the local DMEs who sell breast pumps and of course they couldn't provide one.  Insurance is such a pain!

  • Thanks!  I appreciate having a place to start with... yeah, sometimes insurance can be a pain...but I'll take a breast pump out of it!

  • Thanks so much for posting this! When I called BCBS they said they would only cover the cost of a hand pump.  I asked if I could get a credit for the amount of the pump rental and they said no, they only cover the hand pump.  So I will definitely be looking into it.  Sometimes you can get DME from the hospital too, so that might be worth checking out.

  • I haven't called them yet but it looks like Denman Services Inc in Macomb, IL also has pumps.

  • I'm in the Western suburbs of Chicago and Byram Healthcare 1-800-681-1395 has them.  BCBS IL will cover a manual pump no problem, but for an electric pump, you need a doctor's prescription.  I had to get it approved by my HMO as well which was a pain!  They have Ameda Purely Yours and Medela pumps.
