recc. your cough/cold remedy for under age 1

I'm sure most of you have been there... the cough your DC just can't get over which keeps him/her out of daycare for more days than you'd like.

What can I do? I feel like I've tried everything and I just can't get him to cough up the stuff lurking in his chest. We've tried humidifiers, steamy bathrooms, saline drops, Vicks babyrun (just tried today), a couple of natural remedies... help!

  • honestly it's all you can do until they are much older. my pedi only JUST let us start using 'real' medications on my DD.

I still send my DD with a cough to daycare as long as she is not having a fever, etc.

Once they turn 1 a teaspoon of honey works the best of anything I've tried, but NOT for under 1.

  • He only has a cough and got rejected at daycare today!!  I mean, I don't want him to infect the littler babies, but it's just so frustrating because it's already been a week since he got sick.  The fever is gone, but they said he sounded too bad.

  • I'm assuming you've taken him to the pedi? If not definitely make an appointment. Aside from keeping him comfortable and making sure he's drinking enough, there's not much else except what you're doing.
  • Are you nursing or FF  your baby?  Iw as doing a blend for my baby until she was 1.  I used a homeopathic suggestion from a friend.  It sounds goofy but it works and it doesn't hurt them at all.  MY DD had a lingering cough for MONTHS and <poof> it cleared up within 3 days when I did this.

Don't give her any dairy.  None.  I used non-dairy formula and took out dairy from my diet so she wouldn't get any thru me.  It only took me a week.  It was hard but it completely worked.

    Good luck!

  • I did all that and gave her warm chamomile tea in a sippy (I'd pour it over some ice to cool it so it was warm and not boiling).  That or warm water helped to thin her mucus secretions and soothe her throat.  Otherwise, what you are doing is about it.  If the cough is really bad, you can ask the pedi about it -- one time turned out she had some wheezing/asthma kicked up by a cold and needed albuterol.
