Baby Names

Elizabeth question

Do you think an Elizabeth could make
It though like without a nn? I'm not a fan of Liz or Beth. I like Ellie, DH doesn't. Maybe I'd call her bitty or something cutesey as a baby name bit never as a legit nn. Do you think it would become Liz or Beth along the way?? No offense, but they are kids outdated to me.

  • if you want her to be called elizabeth, i think people will follow suit.

my name has a nickname that i dislike, so i tell people my name is "X."  if they try to call me by the nickname, i tell them i only go by "X."

  • I think it's definitely possible to name your child and not have them go by nicknames. As pp stated, all it takes is for you to say something. My name is Bethany and people constantly try to shorten it to Beth. I've never gone by Beth so I just correct th
  • I think if you always call her Elizabeth, then others will follow suit. That doesn't mean that she won't want to go by something else when she's old enough to decide, though. (I knew a few people that started going by another NN in middle/high school

  • I know a girl named Elizabeth who doesn't use a nn. I think it's hard to enforce this though, she might want one later and Elizabeth is like the queen of nicknames so if you really hate the idea of a nn or the options then I'd pass.

  • My little cousin's name is Elizabeth; she's almost 10 and has never gone by or been called a nickname. One of my neighbor's kids is Elisabeth and she has never gone by or been called a nn either; she's 14. So I think it is entirely possible, if you make s

  • I know an Elizabeth who didn't have a nickname. Although IMO nicknames are out of your control once your DD hits high school.

  • I think it is possible, though I love the nn Eliza :) My youngest is Jericho, we took a little extra time to choose the name because we HATE Jerry and worried he would get called that. So far in his 2 + years no one has tried to shorten his name.

  • I think it really depends on what your kid ends up wanting to do.  If she likes Elizabeth, she'll correct people and use Elizabeth.  If she doesn't, she'll probably insist on being called a nn she likes.  I feel like if you really don't

  • My SIL is Elizabeth.  Her parents and the extended family only call her Elizabeth.  Her friends/boyfriend and DH all call her Liz - but she likes it that way.

  • I love the name Elizabeth and I agree with the PP's, if you call her by her full name people will follow suit. If they start calling her Lizzy, Liz, Beth, etc you can correct them.

Once she's in HS/College she may decide to go by a NN, but it'll

  • DD is Elizabeth. We call her Elizabeth and it took a little while, but everyone else does now, too. DH's family kept trying to call her Lizzie or Liz for a while, but after being ignored or corrected, they dropped it.

  • Yeah sure. Just be prepared that she might choose a nickname for herself as she gets older.

I have an Elizabeth and we call her Betty, but I realize that it might not stick forever.

  • Yes you just have to lay the ground work on the name Elizabeth.
  • I know several Elizabeths who "made it" to adulthood without a NN. But you have to consider that ultimately it's up to your daughter whether or not she wants to go by a NN. If you can't stand any NNs for a particular name, then you may want to find anothe
