School me on sleep training

I have been anti-sleep training since day 1, but since Ayden has been sick the last couple weeks he has been a horrible sleeper.   Usually when he cries we just plug the binky in but he has been so needy lately.

So, in your opinion, how would you go about it?  Is there a method or do you just do straight CIO?

I really hate CIO!
