Pregnant after 35

Anyone have a cat?

Hello. My family has a cat. We've had him since he was 2 days old. He's an indoor cat, has hardly been outside, only when he's escaped and very few times has stayed a whole nite out if we couldn't get him. I live in a small 2 bedroom apartment and his litter box is in the bathroom which is small. I'm not the one cleaning the litter but my question is it better to find our cat another place to live until I deliver my baby? I've read that pregnant women can get toxoplasmosis which is very harmful to the pregnancy. This is freaking me out. We love our cat. Somebody/anybody advise please?!

  • I have a cat and if some else cleans the litter I think the risk of contracting is very small. When I was PG with my DD we had two inside kitties and I was fine then also. Have you talked to your Dr?

  • I have three, one more than I wish I had but I love them all. You do not have to worry about contracting it by just petting your cat, Its not that easy to get and is extremely rare for indoor cats to have it. My Dr. said to just have DH change the litt

  • I agree with the pp and there is no reason you can't be around your cat. I have two and I still scoop the litter sometimes, I just make sure to wash my hands.

  • I have cats and had to either clean the boxes while pregnant or get rid of my cats.  I always wore gloves and washed my hands when I was done.  My baby was born 4 days ago and she's healthy as a horse.  You could ask your OB and I would als
  • My nice answer is no, don't get rid of your cat. I lived with my cat in small places  throughout both of my pregnancies and my boys are fine. Just don't change the litter.

  • I have a cat, I had two with my first pregnancy. They were mainly inside cats, only got out into the back yard a few times also. My poor older cat passed or i would still have both.  I changed the litter both times. But it may be best to have someone

  • I am a licensed vet tech, you only have to worry if you have exposure to the littler box, and its really only dried feces that can infect you. If the box is cleaned daily, you should not have a problem at all. In my 20 years I have never had a pregnant cl
  • Don't freak out about your cat.  I have a cat and I have had her almost 12 years.  You can still pet and love your cat.  You don't need to avoid her.  Your doctor can test you for toxoplasmosis if you want.  My Dr. offered it to m

  • If you've had the cat for awhile and he is indoors don't stress.  My ob asked if I had a cat and I said yes indoor adn she gave me permission to tell my DH he was on litter duty until after the baby is born and winked.  She said that isn't neces

  • Don't get rid of your cat! I've been looking into this too and as long as you keep everything sanitary, it should be fine. Have your DH clean the box -- or you can wear gloves and clean the box. Whoever cleans the box should wash their hands with hot wate
