Insurance and Voluntary Sterilization

Just curious if anyone has insurnace that does not cover this?

When I delivered our insurance did cover this but after my post partum care was through we switched to private insurance and now it isnt covered. My OB was against snipping me at first and said to wait a few months. Well a few months pasted and the weight gain I had from bedrest effed my already effed hip so I had it replaced. My other side is on deaths door so I cannot have a pregnancy ever again. BCP are great but I still have that fear in the back of my head.

I am shocked that this isnt covered for me or my DH through our insurance. Has anyone gotten around this and if so how? TIA!!

Here in FL a vasectomy is less than 500, so even if it's not covered it's relatively affordable. Also many docs have payment plans.

Can't your doctor just say it's medically necessary?

We called insurance and they will not take a letter that states that, which is insane to me! Ya, my DH is going to look into that. I am pretty sure its the same price here. I just am shocked it isnt covered.

Insurance is so stupid. A pregnancy would cost them so much more!

That is so stupid. You'd think it would be cheaper in the long run in this country to give people surgeries to PREVENT pregnancy when people want to do that. But yeah, it's one of the more affordable procedures out of pocket.  Which isn't the point,

Our insurance didn't cover circumcision. Which was fine, because we didn't intend on circ'ing anyway, but it still surprised me that they wouldn't cover it. We haven't looked into it but I'd be surprised if voluntary sterilization was covered.

That seems really odd.  Our insurance covered my husband's vasecotomy but wouldn't cover an Essure because of my age (both my husband an myself are 28).
