Hospital...how far is too far?

H and I are pretty set on using the same hospital as last time.  It has the best NICU in the area and really is considered the best hospital in the area.  The trouble is, since my DD was born, we moved further away from the hospital, putting us about an hour away.  I only work about 15 minutes away from the hospital, and DD's daycare is about 20 mins away.  Also, my in-laws live about 30 mins away from the hospital.  I had a 14 hour labor last time.

I can't get the poll to work, but WWYD?

1. Switch hospitals

2. Not worry, it's only an hour

3. Stay with in laws around due date

4. Other options?

Mine is about 40 minutes away, in good traffic.  During rush hour - who knows!  When I was on my insurance that was the closest dr/hospital on my plan.  I've since gone on DH's insurance, but I love my doctor & don't want to swi

  • I wouldn't worry about it.  My hospital is about 45 minutes away.  When it gets closer to time, depending on how you feel, you could always stay with your in-laws.

  • The closest hospital to us is 40 minutes away. I say you're fine.
  • Stay would be my option.

But then my last labor too forever (over 24 hours), so I had plenty of time to get there.  I can't say I enjoyed the ride to the hospital though.

My ride was about 20 minutes, but it was at midnight with no

  • Not to worry! If you start early labour just head to the IL's
  • You are fine. Think of all the people who live in rural areas. I worked at a hospital for a bit and some came over 2 hours. If I were you I would have 2 bags packed. The hospital one and the one that is at ILs so if you start infrequent contractions

The hospital we are delivering at is about 40 minutes from home, in decent traffic. Rush hour probably puts us at 50 minutes to an hour. I'm not worried about it.
  • Loved my Dr for DD delivery and we have since moved about 1 1/2 hrs away.  We're going back to the same Dr but are having a scheduled c-section so hoping that not getting there in time won't be an issue.
  • I don't think that's too far.  My sister lived 1hr and 45 min away from the hospital she delivered in and she had some 3 hours labors, but still really wanted that hospital and everything worked out fine.

  • I haven't made a decision yet on where I'm delivering (have it narrowed down to two hospitals) but either option is around an hour. If there is traffic or snow, probably closer to an hour and a half. My midwives are not concerned.

  • We are moving to a small town in may they have a hospital there but neither my husband nor I feel comfortable delivering there. I had postpartum hemorrhaging wih my two boys and it's pretty much a guarantee that it will happen again. So we are making an h
  • Our nurse practitioner told us yesterday that we should be at least 2 hours away from the hospital...I'm assuming that's if you have a normal pregnancy...
