Help please with bottle

This whole bottle thing isn't working for us.  We started giving ds a bottle at 3wks, and have done it every night since.  He did ok sometimes. This was with MAMs.  So we tried DropIns.  He did ok with them sometimes, but started becoming increasingly fussy about taking the bottle.  So we tried Dr Browns, no luck at all.

Now, it doesn't matter what bottle we try, the second the nipple touches his mouth he is hysterical and won't have anything to do with it.   The last two nights I've had to give up and just bf him.  And right now I don't plan on giving him one again any time soon.  I was bawling last night it was so bad.

But I don't know what to do. He has to take a bottle.  He will be going to daycare on Jan 1st.  It doesn't seem to make him gassy, we have tried different times of day, different temp bm, dh giving it to him, me giving it to him...nothing seems to be working now.  And it's just getting worse.

Any words of advice would be GREATLY appreciated. THanks!

Re: Help please with bottle

  • Does he take a pacifier?  Try to find a nipple that is similar to his paci, if he takes one.

We use the Breast flow bottles, and DS took to them right away with few problems other than drinking too fast sometimes.

  • Loading the player...
  • Try Avent or Playtex.  Those look more like the real thing and might work.  Otherwise, just keep offering it.
  • I'm sure you've already tried this but maybe it's a flow issue? Could it be that the nipple flow is either to slow or to fast??
  • I know it can be frustrating.  I have an entire tupperware bin of different bottle and nipples because DD was so picky.  The only bottle she would take are the playtex ventaire bottles with the standard silicone nipples (not wide mouth).  They sell them as single bottles so maybe pick one up and give it a try.
  • We were having problems with DS taking expressed milk in a bottle too. Once we started warming the milk for him, he took it just fine. He just needed the milk nice and warm...I guess b/c breastmilk when nursing is so warm? We keep a fondue size crockpot on all day with water in it and put the bottle of expressed bm in there for a few minutes...does the trick!
