Rex is also a stand alone name, like.the actor Rex Harrison.

Eta; I have also heard it as a nn for Kendrick.

I like it with Kendrick. Otherwise, I am not a fan.

I went to high school with a guy named Rex.......he went by Oral. I am not joking, and I can get past it.

I have an uncle whose real name is Rex (not short for anything) - but he goes by Pete. No idea why, but everybody calls him that. I didn't even know what his real name was for a long time.
