? about getting rid of pacifiers (longish, sorry)

So, we went cold turkey with getting DD off pacifiers starting on Sunday night.  She was only using them for bed and naps (and not always for naps), not at all during the day, but with the cold she has and her drooling so much from teething right now, she was getting a rash around her mouth from it, so it had to go.  Sunday and Monday nights were kind of rough - she goes to sleep okay without it, but then would wake up looking for it in the middle of the night and at the crack of dawn.  But Tuesday night and last night were way better - she slept all night without waking up looking for it, but she did wake up far too early for my taste the last two days still.  So we're on track, and hopefully by this weekend she'll be sleeping better in the mornings, too (I know it doesn't help that we used to go and find her binkie for her and shhh her back to sleep in the mornings if she woke up earlier than we wanted, and we can't do that anymore).

My question is - how long might it be before she stops asking for it altogether?  I know all kids are different, but I'm just wondering about other people's experiences.  If you stopped using them cold turkey, how did it go?  How long did it take LO to adjust?

I said DD goes to sleep okay without her binkie - once she's in bed.  But generally, the whole time we're trying to read stories and have quiet time before bed, she does ask for it.  I've just been telling her "there aren't any binkies, I'm sorry" (which is what I've been telling her when she asks for one in the car for weeks) and then changing the subject or redirecting her, and that's been working for the most part.  If I take her out to the kitchen to say good night to DH before bed, she points at the cupboard where we keep her stuff and asks for one, to the point where she doesn't want to give DH a hug and say good night to him, because she's so focused on the binkie cupboard. It's not like these are real problems, I'm just wondering about how long I can expect it to take for her to just kind of forget about binkies.  Thanks!

Re: ? about getting rid of pacifiers (longish, sorry)

  • We took the nuk cold turkey from both girls at 15 months, and it was a little different for each. Both were only getting it at naps/night and long road trips.

DD1 was over it at night within 3 nights and never asked
