Is donor sperm a tax deduction?

Hi! Just curious if anyone knows if donor sperm is deductible? Perhaps as a medical cost? Not sure if it matters but I'm in CA. I will ask my tax preparer but thought someone here might know! : TIA!

Re: Is donor sperm a tax deduction?

  • Yes, as far as I know both the cost and the storage are deductible as medical expenses.

  • Its tax deductible as a medical expense. Although I am not in CA, but its federal so all the same rules should apply.

Yes it is tax deductable (including shipping) but you need to be mindful about how you go about it.  You can use Flex money from an FSA for it and it should qualify.  Or, you can try to deduct it from your taxes as a medical expense however t

  • This is the best news ever! I was wondering about this, but I haven't quite tackled my taxes yet. We definitely meet the 4-5k threshold (ehem 10k+) with our purchase and storage last year, so now I can't wait to do my taxes! Unexpected good news this morn

I assumed any out of pocket fees for procedures, etc would also be deductible.

  • For federal the threshold was 2800 when I just filed but you have to have all receipts and itemize it.

Interesting.  I was told by my FSA that it did not qualify and they use the same IRS publication as a guide.  Where are you seeing that it is?  I might have to go back and redo my 2010 taxes <img src="https://community.thebump.com/cs/emotico
