Is This The New Trend?

I've now read a few articles about allowing your child/children to watch as you give birth to another baby? I just don't see what benefit your child would receive from watching something of that nature.  I feel it would be extremely traumatic for them.

Your Thoughts?

Re: Is This The New Trend?

  • um, I don't think its a NEW trend.  I saw episodes of a Baby Story back in high school where kids were present.

It's not something I personally would do, but I don't think it would be traumatic as long as the child was told what they could e

  • i don't think it's a new thing but it's certainly not for me. I don't know if i'd say it'd be traumatic but I don't see much of the benefit of it at a young age. And I don't want my child seeing me in pain. I feel it's unnecessary.

  • Definitely NMS. Maybe it would be traumatic, maybe not depending on how the labor went. Not a chance I'd want to take.

  • We didn't end up having a choice as I delivered before any help could get there to take care of DS1. It was actually pretty awesome having him there, and being all together as soon as DS2 was born! He was 2, but didn't have any trouble then, and does

  • I have no idea, but my delivery was pretty traumatic for me and my husband. I had to push for 4 hours (FOUR HOURS) and had a 3rd degree tear. i can't even imagine having a small child present for that.
  • I have never heard of anyone doing this. At the hospital I delivered at no children under 12 are allowed in L&D and only siblings are allowed in Post-Partum but either way it's not something I would ever do. While it may not be traumatizing for everyo

  • I was screaming, naked and lost a lot of blood during DS's birth- so much that I passed out when I finally stood up. There is no way in hell I would want my child to witness that.

  • No, not a new trend at all. I do think it's more popular amongst families who birth their babies at home, though.

I think it's great! (Situation dependant, of course...) My son will be there with me when I give birth to

  • DH was 6 when he saw his cousin being born. His aunt was very open, lol. He says he remembers being there, but not much else. I wouldn't do it, since DS gets very concerned when I hurt myself. I think it would make him upset and anxious.

  • Eh, depending on the labor/birth I don't see it as a huge deal. I never screamed during labor, and my sil said it was relaxing being in the room with me (I'm not sure I would say that...but yeah). Not all births are traumatic.

    Like pp did, I wou

  • I was 9 when I saw my little sister be born.  It wasn't traumaitc or anything like that, but I still don't think me or my other siblings should have been there.  It was hard seeing my mom in pain and I know I didn't want to be there but I don't
  • Not. Gonna. Happen. My son gets scared if I hit my head on something and say "ouch!" and wince. I am positive watching a birth would frighten the bejeezus out of him.
