worried about Shaken Baby Syndrome

My DS loves to be bounced. When he is screaming the only thing that calms him is when we hold him up by our shoulder and we bounce up and down. When he is really fussy and crying we have to do it faster to distract him and get him to stop crying and usually if we stop bouncing he will begin to cry again. I can tell that it tickles his belly sometimes when I do it.  I hold him right up against me and I always support his head so his head never moves. I just bounce him by bending my knees and he just moves along with me. I am just so paranoid that somehow this could hurt him. My husband thinks I am nuts b/c he said if it was hurting then he would cry even more. Does anyone know if this could have any effect on him?

  • As long as you aren't violently shaking him you should be fine.

  • It's fine. It really takes intentional, severe movement (shaking) to cause SBS. It is HIGHLY unlikely that you are bouncing him hard enough to hurt him.
  • Shaken Baby Syndrome is more from whiplash.  Not bouncing!  Almost all babies enjoy being bounced!

  • This is the only thing that would calm DD when she was a newborn.  I used to sit on the exercise ball and gently bounce up and down while holding her and supporting her head.  Instant calmness.  We also bounced her on our shoulders and knees while holding her head.  She's more than fine now.

  • their heads have to go violently back and forth a lot to get SBS.  that's why it can cause their necks to snap or cause brain damage.

babies like being jiggled or bounced a little bit!

  • yeah I don't think what you are doing would cause SBS...    it would have to be a very violent shaking bouncing I would think...
  • I just took a childcare (to get my home day care)  course  and they are coming out with new studies that suggest that even bouncing on the knee and playfully tossing a baby on the bed can cause some damage, in children as old as four years.
