NCDR: whole milk and constipation

We've been struggling with constipation for a long time.  At least the past 6 months.  She has a small anal fissure that occaisonally bleeds.

This constipation started even before whole milk was introduced.  Whole milk hasn't necessarily made it worse, so I'm not sure if that is the problem.  Yogurt and cheese make it worse. My doc ok'd miralax to help, but she's been on it for close to two months now and while it does help, she still has rock solid poops.  Its so sad when she does poop those.  She screams, sticks her legs out straight, gets all sweaty, and tears streaming down her face.  I brought it up at her one year appt and the doc asked about her fluid intake and diet, which he said sounded fine, and then said that I should try to get her off the miralax.  Well, she is still having problems ON it. I'd like to get this figured out before I take her off.

So now my questions.  I'm contemplating switching to almond or coconut milk, but I'm not sure which.  Or, stopping whole milk, and replacing with yogurt and cheese, hoping the milk is the causing factor. Or should I get a second medical opinion because it shouldn't be this bad?

Sorry if that was rambly.  I'm just not sure what to do any more and my pedi is useless.

  • Oh poor LO.  That sounds awful.

My DS1 had constipation issues.  It was not fun.  He eventually just outgrew it with time.  I would not replace cow's milk with coconut or almond if you don't have to.  LO needs full fat mi

  • I do everything I can to get fiber in to her.  She won't eat a full serving of ANYTHING off of spoon anymore, so I dont really give her oatmeal very frequently.  I use whole grain bread for toast and for sandwiches, I buy whole grain nutrigra

  • Have you considered giving her 2% milk?  At least part-time?  My sister had to do that with my nephew because of constipation issues, and it has made a world of difference.
  • Have you cut cheese out of her diet?

I had the same issue with my daughter.  We've mostly elimated cheese from her diet.  This seems to help a lot.

Also, we keep water available for her throughout the day.  On the weekend

  • We are having the same problems with constipation. Our pediatrician said that it had nothing to do with whole milk and to try giving her juice everyday. We even did straight juice without added water. Prune, apple, grape, any kind of juice. Nothing wor

  • Have you tried goat milk? It worked for us, almond milk gave DD painful gas.
  •  She doesnt eat cheese on a daily basis because it hardens her poops so much.  Very rarely I will give her a small piece of mine if I'm munching on it or a few slivers of shredded cheese.

    I haven't tried 2% yet.  I guess I'm
