Success after IF

Jury duty?

So I got my notice to serve on US Dist.rict Court. I don't have childcare because I stay home with J.  It is a week long "standby" where I have to call in the night before to see if my number is called to report in the morning.

I'm EBF and other than my DH, no one has stayed with J yet without me. This will change because my business ramps up this summer and my mom is going to watch her, but my mom is still working and can't watch J for my jury duty in April. I can defer, but I will have the same problems in a few months, but with my business in full swing over the summer it will cost me a ton of money in lost income.

I asked an attorney friend last night what kind of court we are talking about. Apparently this is "big court" which could have trials lasting months. We didn't make sacrifices for me stay home J (with a seasonal business) so I could leave her in the infant stage for jury duty. I would have done a happy dance to get jury duty as a full time employee to get out of my boring job.

Anyone have advice on how to get an exemption? A deferral is not really an option, unless they can defer 6+ months.  I read the typical exemptions and they don't really apply (felon, moved). Does this count as a health condition? My attorney friend thought EBF wasn't an reason as they could recess for me to pump.

Re: Jury duty?

  • I work for a federal district court and our jury administrators are pretty lenient with regards to giving people waivers.  In your situation, I'm not sure they would exempt you completely but could put your name back in to be called at another tim

  • I wish I could be more help. I got called for jury duty when DS was little and couldn't get out of it. EBF isn't an excuse. They just had to provide a space for me to pump (which they did). I actually had to sit on a jury, but luckily the trial was only a

  • It's the federal court so the state laws won't really matter much.

  • Thanks everyone for the feedback. We are in AZ, but as it was pointed out it is federal court. I did run across one thing that was interesting in the FAQs.

  • This same exact thing happened to me.

I was supposed to report for duty like a week or two after I had my DD (who came a month early so we weren't expecting it) and I was able to defer last minute.  I didn't get nailed with it again u
