Toddlers: 24 Months+

Someone please tell me this is normal and will get better!

DH and I along with DS1 (just turned 3) and DS2 (4mths) just moved from upstate NY to Orlando at the end of February. With that, we started with a new daycare that is very different than what we had up north. We used to go to an in home provider that had a small number of kids of all ages and it was very personable and homey. Now, the kids go to a center where they are in their own rooms with a large number of kids and teachers. For DS1 it's much more like 'school' as he has spanish lessons and various other structured activities throughout the day.

My problem is that DS1 FLIPS OUT every single morning. We have a routine where we first drop of his brother and he helps put away his bottles, pick out a swing etc and he generally does well with that but as soon as we go into the hall to head to his classroom he starts crying and saying no... it's breaking my heart.

The teachers all give a great report at the end of the day saying that by the end of breakfast he's fine and having fun but it's KILLING me to drop him off everyday like this. I'm now at the point where I have to just walk him into the room and turn around and go and let the teacher deal with it since me hanging around trying to ease him in was only making it worse.

they keep telling me that it'll take a couple of weeks for him to get over it and that most kids go through this but I just don't see it getting better. Has anyone else dealt with this??  Please tell me it's normal and that it WILL get better soon? Do you have any suggestions for how to get him to be okay with drop off?? I just don't know what more to do... Every day I second guess our move here because of this....

Thank you!

  • From working at a daycare, I can tell you this is pretty normal. It can take a few weeks for a child to adjust to the new adults and children, it's all out of their comfort zone. I have also seen it with my DD, and it sucks, but they usually get into a sw

  • I think it's normal, too, and will get better. DD(3) started preschool at January.  She was excited for the first 2 days, but then the novelty wore off and she cried for the next 2 weeks.  There was one day her teacher had to help me wrench her
  • Thanks to both of you, it really helps!

honeybee - that sounds exactly like our situation except that it happens whether I drop off or DH drops off. The teacher has had to pry him out of my arms and I leave with him kicking and screaming. I feel

B didn't start DC until she was 13 months. She was not happy with me and I literally had to sneak out of the room while she was distracted or else there was an enormous breakdown for at least 5 months. It wa

How is your lo doing when you dative at the end of the day? If they are settled in and playing then I wouldn't worry. Your child has had a lot of changes a little seperation anxiety is to be expected.

  • It took M a good month to adjust. And her preschool is in the same building where I work! I would sob uncontrollably that first month, sure I had made a mistake by moving her from her daycare (in home) to the preschool. After a month she separated easily
