Preemies

Still not interested in solids

My DD is 6 months old now (4 months adjusted since I had her early at 32 weeks). She's drooling lots, biting on everthing and seems to be teething. I tried to givie her solids three times now.  She spit out avocado and didn't seem interested. I tried rice cereal mixed with my breastmilk twice and she ate some of it. When she got real fussy & didn't want it anymore, I went back to giving her a bottle and she took it immediately. She drank all her milk in her bottle.

She's a preemie. Is she ready for solids? Should I stop and try again another time? Do I give solids according to adjusted age or real age? She sure still loves my breastmilk.

Re: Still not interested in solids

  • My daughter took a little more time to get on baby food.  It is still a messy process for eating.  We would try a little bit of baby food, and then we would mix the rest of the baby food with her formula in her bottle to give her more nourishmen

  • 4m adjusted is still young for solids. I'd suggest trying once a week at the most to gauge interest for now but don't expect any until closer to six months adjusted.

  • Generally, a baby is not going to be physically ready for solids until 6 months old (adjusted age for a preemie). And, even then, a 6 mo old may not be mentally interested in solids yet.

There are several signs you need to look for that show you

  • don't stress out, she might just not be ready yet. Some babies start early, but many don't start eating until 6 months. Maybe just take a break for a month or two and then try again. This is what happened with my DD and when we went back to feeding solids
