Exception to Y Trend?

Robyn. Do you think this is an exception to the Y trend going on? I actually seem to prefer Robyn to Robin..

Your thoughts?

Re: Exception to Y Trend?

  • No. Spell it Robin.
  • You're putting a y where there should be an I. Not an exception, but I do like it and also went to school with a Robyn.

She will correct people on spelling all the time.

  • Not an exception because she will have to tell people "It's Robin with a Y" when they ask her name.

That being said, I knew a Robyn growing up and I think it's not that big of a deal.

  • On some names, I hate the Y because it seems forced, however I have seen Robin spelled with a Y, so it doesn't seem like something you just thought up on your own in an attempt to make your baby so special and original.
  • I'm going to go against the grain here and say Robyn is traditionally the girl variant and Robin is for a boy, like Christopher Robin, at least in England. I dated a British guy in college and his sis was Robyn, and I spelled her name wrong at first becau

  •  I've never met a female Robin (that I know of) only Robyns.  It doesn't seem like a trend to me.  I thought it was the feminine spelling of the name.

  • Why would this one name be an exception? ETA: I did not know about the British spelling thing. I feel like a hypocrite since I like the name Emmalyn. Some people thing that that is a Y trend, but I don't think so....:P

  • It's actually one of my most disliked names, so I don't like Y or I in there.  But Robin.

  • I know a Robyn in her 40s, so I don't think it's that weird.  The name is NMS either way but it's not an instance where I feel strongly about the y.

  • My aunt born in 1952 is a Robyn. My grandparents are anything but "add a y" people.

Check BTN - this spelling was in the Top 500 for fifty years straight. It's #43 right now in Ireland and #83 in Scotland. BTN defines it as "feminine varian
