Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

If you have a climber...

My 18 mo has been climbing for the last few months.  She climbs on chairs to get on the table, and recently she has started climbing on the bar stools to get on the counter.  When will she "grow out" of this?  I know you can start discipline at 18 mo.  Should I discipline for this or is she just exploring her environment?  I can't even go pee without worrying that she will be on the counter when I come back.  Suggestions?

Re: If you have a climber...

  • i know this isn't feasible for everyone, but we got a 5ft climber/slide combo and put it in the kids playroom. if that's an option for you it will definitely help.

Is it possible to put a gate up so you can contain her for a few minutes?  I'm not there yet, but I do think it's a phase she will grow out of eventually.

As far as discipline, I would put her back on the floor with a "climbing

  • We look nuts when people come over, but we turn our chairs over on the floor when not using them. Otherwise ds is on the table throwing things. He still climbs many things (and we have a large slide in our playroom) but this takes care of the most dangero

  • I have a big time climber. I move my chairs away from the table against the wall and he climbs on and off over and over. I think its good for them to explore what they can do. Bar stools are a different story though they are higher and unstur

  • Sorry, no solutions, just empathy.  We're going through the same thing, I don't know how many times I said "feet on  the floor" last night...we bought new stuff for his bath tub because now he's in the actual tub, and while I was putting it i

  • We have really tall gates (FYI- you can get a taller pet gate than a child gate) and I have a feeling those will be scaled within the next month or two.  Though, they're not the weakpoint - the couch is.  He scaled that months ago.  He c

  • Hah!  I'm not sure they ever entirely grow out of it. :)

I would highly encourage you to set up safe spaces for her to climb - pillows, the couch without a coffee table nearby, outside on rocks with your help, or whatever places you decide.&

  • My suggestion, although not an overly great one, but one that we've had to implement, is putting all our chairs behind the baby gate. When we're not eating, they're literally just in the other room. It looks like crap, but it's just not worth an accident

  • DD is the same way.  I simply can't leave her alone in the dining room or kitchen, she either gets gated out of those rooms, or comes into the bathroom with me.  Fun, right?

I have found that not making a big deal over the climbing is v

  • We had to move the chairs away from the table at first, and for awhile, I moved them outside on the deck. He was not only climbing on the table and counters, but pushing the chairs over to the baby gates and climbing over into non-childproofed areas.</

  • Thanks for the ideas, everyone.  Now that the weather is nicer we are trying to get out to the park for opportunities to climb there.  We do have a playroom where a slide would fit.  I'll talk to DH about that.  We have baby gates a
