Food Allergy

Peanut Allergy - Genetic?

Hi ladies! I've never posted over here before so hello =)

This may be a silly question, and I apologize if it's been discussed before, but I'd love to hear from anyone with personal experience. Does anyone here have a peanut allergy - and your child does too?

I have an anaphylactic peanut allergy and am a soon to be a FTM in August. I've never read anything confirming or denying that food allergies can be genetic, but my child also being allergic is on my list of worries. Neither of my parents have this allergy, but I do have a cousin that is also severely allergic.

Having a peanut allergy has caused me so much fear growing up and even still as an adult, so I'm already starting to worry about this! I'm even starting to think things like "what if my daughter loves peanut butter (assuming she doesn't develop the allergy) and gets upset that we can't have peanut butter in the house."

Re: Peanut Allergy - Genetic?

  • I have a friend whose DH is severely allergic to peanuts, and their pedi told them to avoid all nuts with their DD until she was 2. My DS is anaphylactic to peanuts as well, and there is no family history of food allergies on either side.

  • From what I understand, the genetics might cause a tendency to be allergic but not to a specific food.  The fact that you are allergic will keep her from being exposed inadvertently.
