Holding DS's Hand

Help!

My son just turned 15 mos old and has been walking since 12 mos. A few days ago the weather was warm so we went outside. He was so happy to be free but took off into the neighbors yard, down the sidewalk, etc. Whenever I would try to redirect him to our yard or tried to hold his hand he would pull it back and throw a fit. I have never let him walk in public places like a store before and has always been in a stroller or shopping cart. I know/fear that the day is coming where he will want to walk. How the heck do you teach them to stay with you and hold your hand. I've been trying to hold his hand and walk with him in the house but he wants no part of it. I really don't want to put him on a leash! Any advice? TIA

P.S. Our yards are not fenced and the backyard is the dog potty, yuck:)

  • My daughter is like that. Or used to be. No fenced in yard either. We go for lots of walks, at her pace but she has to hold my hand, even when running. After a few weeks of, if she refused to hold my hand, she automatically went back inside, she got it. S

  • I think it's a phase all kids go through. My DD was like that and now loves holding hands. It's so cute when she holds out her hand for me and says, "Hands?"

    Just give it time.

  • We've been walking since right before 10 months, and like you, don't really let her walk in public places. The first real place was at the pumpkin patch in October, and it was a disaster of not holding hands. We've been doing a little better since the beg

  • LO started walking at 10 months. As soon as she managed to walk across the house on her own I started letter her walk to the car (no garage) and into day care plus other places like the grocery store, anywhere I don't take the stroller out because there i

DS knows that if we are walking in a parking lot or near the street that he has to hold my hand. Pretty much as soon as he could walk a bit on his own, I would let him walk if we w

  • DS has 2 choices. Hold my hand while we walk or he doesn't get to walk. This is usually in semi-unsafe places, like walking across the parking lot, out near the street, etc. I try to explain to him why he has to hold hands (but also have the benefit of hi

  • No advice here. We have a leash.

I was really consistent last year about going inside if he refused to hold my hand or ran away, and he is still a runner now at 2. So we gave up and bought a leash. He gets a little bit of freedom and I get to kno
