Another Caregiver Option

I've been speaking with a doula that I am hiring to help out with my hospital birth.  Since we aren't moving to the area until my third trimester she's giving me recommendations on caregiver and where to birth.  If you remember my other posts, I have three hospitals to choose from: 2 large hospitals and then one smaller one.  I was discouraged from birthing at the smaller hospital by my family because they don't do a lot of births, BUT the doula is highly recommending it.  I was unsure about the hospital myself as they only have one OB that works there (and then two others that are "on call") which seemed like not enough, but I have now figured out why!  Apparently, at that hospital, you do NOT see an OB regularly.  They don't have midwifes, but family doctors will be the one you go to see and be treated by through prenatal care and the birth unless the OB is needed.

So, that's my other option I wasn't really aware of.  This hospital birth center was actually the mastermind of the family doctors at this hospital.  It's all set up so you can see the same doctor pre-pregnancy, during your pregnancy, and then they can see both you and the baby after your pregnancy.

Would you personally choose a family doctor over and OB if a midwife were not an option?  I am really leaning toward this option and have been really leaning toward this hospital the whole time even with the discouragement from my family.

  • Unlike obstetrics, family medicine isn't a surgical specialty so in a way I suppose it's a different model of care. If you did need a csection, I assume that's when they'd call in one of the three OBs. They may or may not be more conservative with interve

  • I did choose a family doctor. I love her. She was at my last birth, and I'm very happy to be with her again. She attends most of her patients births herself - because it's a small part of her practise, she can do that without getting burned out.

The one thing about these smaller community hospitals is that they're usually pretty dinky operations. For instance

  • If you are low risk I think the community hospital with the family doctors would be a great choice, especially since your doula recommends it.  Ideally, you would only want someone there to catch the baby which a general practitioner would be able to

I've seen your posts here and on our BMB, and it seemed you were really hoping for a home birth with midwives. If all
