Snacks. Did I still sort of give in?

So i'm trying to teach my daughter that she can't have any food she wants. She will often not eat her meal or snack and then beg for junk food later. I decided I needed to not give in and have her eat what she was given and that's it.

So she wanted a morning snack and I gave her banana slices. She loves bananas but saw the stupid bag of doritos my husband and I left on the table last night. She started throwing a fit, whining, pointing at them say "eat! eat!" and even after I moved them out of sight she fussed about eating but wouldn't touch the bananas. I didn't let her have chips but I did give her strawberries. Now she's back to her normal self eating that. Should I have said "bananas or nothing"? Or do y'all think it's not really giving in if I gave her something else but it wasn't something she was asking for specifically and is still healthy? I don't want her to feel she won, but I also want her to eat something... and something healthier than chips.

  • I don't see it as giving in. I see it as giving her options for a healthy snack, maybe a compromise at most but I definitely don't see it as giving in.

  • Okay thanks guys. Yeah I guess I need to start giving more options. She's getting into that independent stage. :) She's 19 months and likes to pick which shirt she wears sometimes. Thought she was kind of young to already start doing that but I guess not

  • Ditto the others.  Food is one of those things that our kids have control over (wait until PT-ing!) and therefore to battle over it can be VERY futile.  Just offer options.  Say, "bananas or strawberries?"  If she points to the chips b

  • I usually let my son pick out his snack. We go to the pantry, and he chooses. I veto any unhealthy choice, and he usually picks something of which I approve. I started doing it because he would throw a fit if I gave him puffs and he wanted cheerios.

  • I solved that problem at the grocery store long ago. LO eats whatever I eat, she doesn't get option. If I don't want her eating something then I don't want to send the message that there is "your food" and "my food", it is all our food and she is welcome

If you are talking in terms of winning, you are making it battle it doesn't need to be.

  • She has acceptable snacks to choose from. I usually give her two choices, that way she gets something she wants.

  • I try to never make food a battle. I give choices, but when it comes to fruit & veggies they can have what they want. I don't like wasting food though, so I generally give the choice before I prepare something to help decrease waste.

  • Unfortunately in our house that can't work--due to my daughter's food allergies. So, we do try to have snacks that she can't have while she is napping or in bed for the night. However, there was a time where we were eating birthday cake which she could

  • I was just asking my Pedi about this kind of stuff at DD's 18m appt. She said now is not the age to fight those kinds of battles. Just to get her to eat as healthy as possible and avoid filling her up with Goldfish or whatever else kind of snack.
