Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

advice needed (behavior related)

My DD2 has a really hard time when she doesn't get what she wants. She screams like it's the end of the world. Here's an example - I gave her something to drink today, and she spilled it all over her. So, I took it away temporarily so I could fix the top so it wouldn't spill, and she started screaming like crazy.

At this age, reasoning with her doesn't really work. I've tried telling her what's going on, but she's too busy freaking out to even hear me.

I've read that this is normal, but yet I don't know any other babies her age who do it. So, I guess I'm asking if there is anything I can do about this.

Re: advice needed (behavior related)

  • DD started doing this type of thing just this week. I basically just let her have a moment (usually this involves laying her on the floor), don't react negatively and just wait for her to stop. If it isn't stopping, I basically just talk to her like norma

  • I try to warn DD *first* (tell her what's going to happen BEFORE you take it out of her hands), but I also try to get her to do the action - so, I would say "Please give me the cup so I can fix the lid," and hold my hand out for her to put it into.&nbs

  • This is most likely a phase. Along with a warning a suggested by PP, just say one time in a calm, normal tone something like, "As soon as I'm done fixing the lid, I will give it back to you" and ignore her fit while you do that.

  • OP-Our LO is the same place as yours.  At school when he starts his teacher will say "all done,"  as in "your fit is all done."  When she says it he usually stops and goes on to something else.  I've tried that, but it doesn't work
