Different child at preschool????

So my DS has been going to our temple daycare/preschool center since August.  He just turned 2 in March.  I am a stay at home mom and thought the interaction of other kids would be great for him.  He goes 3 days a week from 9-1.  Since he began he has really blossomed.  He doesn't want to leave when I pick him up and when we pull into the parking lot he gets very excited points and says "school!".  Even when we drive by the school and are not going there he points.

At home he is full of energy and laughter and is bouncing off the walls.  Last Friday we went to a little Shabbat program that they had because it was his birthday week, so they brought him up and celebrated and sang happy birthday.

Around stangers he is very quiet at times and it takes him a while to break out of his shell.  Well we noticed that he didn't smile at all while we observed, just followed the motions.  He got in line with his class, went up to the bima when he was called, but no smiles!

Today I asked his teacher if he laughs and runs around with the other kids.  I was shocked by her answer of NO! She said she can tell he loves to be there, participates in all the activities and plays with other children, but does not smile or laugh or get crazy in any way.  Its like she is talking about a different kid!!! I could not believe it!!!

My question is, have any other moms experienced this with their toddler? I would think that he would be having a ball at school considering how he acts when we arrive and leave.  Mornings we don't have school he picks up his lunch box and walks to the door and gets upset when I let him know its not a school day.  :(

  • Our kid apparently doesn't even speak all day at school.  They all love him and say he behaves like an angel. :)  He's a hyper, crazy, climbing the furniture, never shuts up kid at home.  I teach elem school and this seems fairly common.

  • My ds is bouncing off the walls at home but is an angel (so they say) at preschool.  It's very hard to believe he is as good as they say.

Eh, leave him alone about it.  Some kids take longer to be social.  Try not to label a

Thank you.  That is how I feel about it too.  He is an observer, taking it all in.  This preggo will just try and relax a bit!

  • As an elementary school teacher, I have to say that it is fairly common for children to have home and school personalities.  I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Yes! My DD is the same way at music class and library time. She quietly observes, and when we get home, she plays music class/library. She sings the songs, dances, says the phrases the teachers do, pretends that baby brother is her student. I know I was l
