Question about bedsharing with older babies

Hello All-

Recently my son has decided that he will only go to sleep in my bed.  I am fine with that and I love cuddling with him.  However, I am not always able to stay with him while he sleeps, or sometimes I wake up and he's already squirming or crawling a little further than I am comfortable with.  Sometimes I can move him from my bed to his crib with no problem right after he falls asleep, but sometimes he wakes up.  Now that he's very mobile, though, I don't feel comfortable leaving him in bed alone.  We don't have a cosleeper, but I'm certain that even if we did he could crawl out.  How do you safely bedshare with a baby that is mobile?!  I don't want to barricade him in with pillows because I'm scared of him smothering, but I'm also scared not to because I obviously don't want him falling off the bed.

Any tips would be appreciated.

  • Sorry.  They are 10 months old.  :)

  • I took my bed apart and keep the mattress and box springs on floor. Also kept a crib mattress by his side of the bed.

  • We took our bed off the frme so it would be lower and taught him how to turn around and go feet first.  At 10 mo,  they can do that.  The pillows would be fine at 10 mo too in my opinion.  They will move if they can't breathe by tha

  • We also used bed rails and taught them to crawl down safely as soon as they could crawl.  Although all babies are different of course neither of mine ever went wondering - they'd just cry for me to come get them.  The rails were to prevent rolli
  • We keep our bed on its frame but have bedrails on both sides of our bed. I always wake when the babies stir so there's never been a time when they are awake and I don't know if. If I'm able to sneak out of bed while the baby is sleeping I watch her on t
  • We used rails, too. We also had a video monitor so we could keep an eye on her if we heard her stirring.

By 6 months DD knew how to get off the bed safely and could climb down, feet first on her own. (which was kind of funny, because she wa

  • We put the mattress on the floor around 9 months. We taught my DD to get down safely, but she will still go head first just for the fun. She thinks the panic look on our faces as we grab her is hilarious. She would also roll around and giggle and not p

  • Ditto lots of what was already said

Bed on floor, side car crib on one side, bed rail on the other. You can put pillows on the floor around the bed too. There is a lot of piece of mind with having the bed on the floor.

  • Thanks everyone.  I guess I should've mentioned that the bed is already on the floor.  My bed was REALLY high, so before I ever let him start sleeping with me I took it off the frame.  I will work on teaching him how to scoot off safely
