Crying After falling asleep

For the past 3 nights Ikey goes down asleep after bath and nursing as usual by 8:30 and 10 minutes later starts whimpering/crying. He calms down almost right away when I either pat him or pick up and rock him. But when I put him down or remove my hand, after a couple of minutes starts whimpering again. I have to sit next to him with my hand on him for about 30 minutes until he's out for good. What's going on??? He is 2.5 months and have never done that before.
