Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Severe allergic reaction to AMOX.

My 16 month old has had a severe allergic reaction to amoxicillin. It started on Tuesday night with a few spots that looked like ant bites. We took her in to after hours since she was also on amox. for ear infection. The doc. determined that it was an allergy to the antibiotic. She was on day 8, so the doc had us just stop the doses. She said to keep her on benedryl. She also prescribed a steroid (prednisone) and said if it wasn't getting better, to give her that. Well, we are on day 3 and my child does not even look like herself. It is scary. She is puffy and swollen and so so very itchy. I feel absolutely awful!! I called the doctor and they said to give her the steroid. What do you think? Are steroids ok? The last thing I want to do is make her worse!! -one scared mama.

  • I think the doctor would know if the steroid is ok or not - follow the dr's advice.

  • GIVE HER THE STEROID. Do not wait to give her the steroid. This happened to my son and he was swollen and the dr kept saying he didn't need the steriod. We ended up in the emergency room and an overnight stay with heavy doses of steroids.

  • I do realize I sound dramatic in my post above but I really just don't want you to relive our experience. It was also a reaction to the amoxycillan for my son - started the day after his last dose.

     Good luck!

  • I really do appreciate any and all advice. I have talked to 2 other mamas who are saying DO NOT give the steroid unless it is for asthma or croup. They recommended topical strenght hyrdro cortisone and vitamin c for swelling. Still on the fence for wha

  • I can understand your hesitancy about giving meds but you need to trust your pediatrician. Anecdotal evidence from friends and other moms is nice to have but your pedi is trained in medical issues and treatments where your friends are not. If you have con

  • Please do give the steriod. A steriod is what her immune system needs to bring the inflammation down! Her body can't do it on her own and the inflammation will continue and escalate. A steriod is not a bad thing! Please do give it if the doc has directed

  • Give the steroids, it will help! Just had a coworker have a severe amox reaction and steroids were all that helped. Obviously she's an adult but I think the same would apply to child since pedi prescribed it.

  • Oh my goodness - did you not read my post???

This is serious - give her the steroids. A topical will do NOTHING for you. It may relieve her itching so I guess there is that. Benedryl is going to do nothing for you at this point.

  • Yes, you need to use the steroid.  The rash is coming from the inside of her body so a topical cream will not do anything for her.  I have had an amoxicillin rash myself and it was AWFUL.  Please give her the steroid!  The risk to her

  • And why take the chance of waiting another day? What if the swelling goes down is what you are thinking? I thought that to. What if it doesn't and then you end up in the hospital like we did. You were looking for real mom advice and you have it.

  • Antibiotics stay in your system for 72 hours after you stop taking them. Didn't anyone tell use back up protection for your bc pill during and 3 days after if you were on an antibiotic? My doc and pharmacists always said that to me. I've have several reac
