Babies: 6 - 9 Months

poop question... is this constipation?

Sorry in advance if this gross, TMI, or super obvious, but as a FTM I need some reassurance!  I can't tell if my daughter is constipated!

When my daughter was only breastfed, she would only poop every 3 or 4 days.  Now that she is on solids for the past few weeks (she is now 6 months), she poops several times a day.  But the poops are small, maybe cherry or apricot-sized.

They're soft-ish, but what bothers me is that they are dry, kind of like raw bread dough.  She grunts and pushes when she poops, but doesn't seem overly bothered.

I asked my pediatrician, but she just seemed a bit dismissive saying that breastfed babies are rarely constipated.  Given that she poops every day, I "think" she's ok, but just wanted to see what other moms thought.

Thanks in advance!

  • I don't think your baby is constipated, however you may want to soften her stools a little bit by feeding her fruits that get things softer.... pears, prunes, peaches, papaya.

    Thanks ladies for the feedback!

I wouldn't say she's pushing more than usual.  Even with just breastmilk she would push and grunt.

She's on fruits (plums, pear, apple, avocado), veggies (squash, sweet potato, peas, carrots), and

  • Straining to poop and only pushing out a little ball is constipation. I would give her an ounce or two of prune or pear juice daily. Solids do constipate, so it's not abnormal. It takes a second for their systems to adjust.
