Re: GTKY
How many kids do you have? Just one for now. She's 17 months old and absolutely a beautiful bright light in my life. I do want a lot of kids though.
Where region/area are you from? Rural Iowa
Are you currently homeschooling or do you plan to in the future? I plan to start doing some PreK work next school term but very loosely. She'll be right around 2 then.
What are your reasons for choosing to homeschool? There are so many reasons I want to homeschool. DH was homeschooled and loved it. I like the element of shelter homeschooling provides. I want to teach my child about the harsher realities of life in my home under my terms. Our public schools are terrible and just not a good option. I love the freedom homeschooling allows for. I also can't wait to explore different styles of learning and teaching. I plan to do a lot of hands on activities!
Were you homeschooled? I attended public school and private Catholic school. DH and his sisters were homeschooled.
What do you like most about homeschooling? I really can't wait to start homeschooling DD. She loves learning and it's going to be great watching her discover new things with me.
Add anything else you want to add here. I'm excited to see what curriculum everyone follows or doesn't follow and hear about the experiences of others. I'm glad TB godz finally came around.
Hi LatteLady!
Glad to see you here. I believe we've been on the same side of a few SAHM board homeschool debates
What do you do? I am a SAHM, but was a pediatric RN before DS got here.
How many kids do you have? 1 so far, but plan to start trying at the end of the next year for the 2nd (and likely final) LO. They should be almost 3 years apart...
Where region/area are you from? We are in a large city in NC.
Are you currently homeschooling or do you plan to in the future? We plan to in the future
What are your reasons for choosing to homeschool? The schools in the area are not the best. We believe homeschooling is the best for our family. It offers so many opportunities to the children and families who homeschool.
Were you homeschooled? My husband and I both were homeschooled (although I did PS from kindergarten to 9th grade)
What do you like most about homeschooling? The flexibility that HSing allows is key for us. My husband works second shift on a constantly changing schedule. The ability to be able to have our school hours work around his schedule is important to us, and will allow so much more quality family time.
My Ovulation Chart
Hey! Yes we were definitely on the right errr, same side of some homeschooling debates :P
I recognize most everybody over here. I'm glad this board is (finally) here.
What do you do? I am a SAHM now but taught kindergarten before DS1 was born
How many kids do you have? 2 boys
Where region/area are you from? Texas
Are you currently homeschooling or do you plan to in the future? We will officially start Kindergarten homeschool in the fall with DS1
What are your reasons for choosing to homeschool? I feel like I can do a better job at home with my kids in a fraction of the time. I like the flexibility of homeschooling. I feel like kids are exposed to too much these days and would like to keep my kids innocent as long as possible. I think children need more time to move and play. I love the idea of going at my child's pace instead of the classes pace. I probably could name a thousand more reasons.....
Were you homeschooled? No, but my mom wanted me to homeschool my children even before I decided to homeschool them.
What do you like most about homeschooling? I think we will like the flexibility and time together the most. I think I would miss my baby too much if he was gone everyday for 7 plus hours!
Add anything else you want to add here. I'm excited to get to know you ladies!!!
What do you do? I'm a sahm.
How many kids do you have? 3. Joaquin is 6, Avalin is 5 and Emery is 7mo.
Where region/area are you from? The beautiful midwest. Prairies in Kansas.
Are you currently homeschooling or do you plan to in the future? Currently homeschooling. 1st grade and Pre-K. Second year in.
What are your reasons for choosing to homeschool? We felt it was the best choice for our family. Couldn't see sending the kids away all day when we felt I was fully capable of doing it myself. We considered sending the kids to a private school where ds1 went to two years of preschool and dd went to one year, but couldn't swing it financially w/o me getting a full time job. I wasn't willing to give up my time with dd to do that so we agreed to hs.
Were you homeschooled? I was for 5th-8th. Public schooled the rest.
What do you like most about homeschooling? The freedom.
How many kids do you have? 2. The jury is still put on whether or not there will be a 3rd.
Where region/area are you from? Maryland
Are you currently homeschooling or do you plan to in the future? We plan to on the future. But I plan on going to the homeschooling store in my area in a few weeks to see what they have to offer for preschool aged children.
What are your reasons for choosing to homeschool? I have several reasons. I think homeschooling offers a better education. I also think it will shelter my children better.
Were you homeschooled? No
What do you like most about homeschooling? We shall see.
Add anything else you want to add here.
(Sorry for the all bold look - iPad doesn't let me format too well
)
What do you do? SAHM and part-time medical transcription from home.
How many kids do you have? 2yo b/g twins and another set of twins on the way
Where region/area are you from? Michigan.
Are you currently homeschooling or do you plan to in the future? For sure plan to HS for preschool. Want to HS the rest of the way, but not sure yet if the finances will allow - I may have to go back to work eventually
If we do HS, we plan to offer the kids the option of going to public school when they reach high school.
What are your reasons for choosing to homeschool? Individualized learning, flexibility, and really fun field trips
Were you homeschooled? No, but my youngest brother was for a couple of years.
What do you like most about homeschooling? Same as my reasons for choosing to HS
I'm really glad this board is here!
DD2 | June 2011
DS1 | Oct 2013
ADD3 | Oct 2014 (April 2001)
DS2 | June 2016

Due with baby blob August 2021
What do you do? I'm an active SAHM.
How many kids do you have? An almost two-year-old, and we are in the process of adopting a toddler.
Where region/area are you from? FL
Are you currently homeschooling or do you plan to in the future? I plan to homeschool my DD and future kids, hopefully until high school.
What are your reasons for choosing to homeschool? There are so, so many reasons we're making the homeschool choice. I believe kids should be way more active than 6 hours behind a desk, I want my kids to learn Latin and higher maths, I believe in more than one type of learning, the schools in my area rank poorly in my already poorly ranked state, I don't believe in putting limits on learning, etc.
Were you homeschooled? No, I went to private school.
What do you like most about homeschooling? There are no limits on learning. If a subject is particularly interesting or difficult, more time can be spent on it.
Add anything else you want to add here.
My dream is to have a Pinterest-perfect droolworthy homeschool room in our house!
What do you do? I am a college student studying Elementary Education. I will graduate at Christmas.
How many kids do you have? 1 - Journey, 2.5
Where region/area are you from? Midwest
Are you currently homeschooling or do you plan to in the future? We currently follow a rough at-home preschool program. We do a lot of play-based and activity-based learning, but he really thrives at memorizing anything and everything, so I let him. Right now we are working on counting to 100, reading 3 letter words, scissor & glue skills, jigsaw puzzles, putting things in order, etc.
What are your reasons for choosing to homeschool? I don't think that the schools around here are a good fit for him. Based on his skill level at 2.5, by the time he gets to kindergarten he will just have to sit there, bored. I want him to be exposed to peer groups, but not at the expense of his education.
Were you homeschooled? nope. I really wish I was, but my mother would not have been able to handle it. The system really let me down academically.
What do you like most about homeschooling? The freedom and how individualized it can be.
Add anything else you want to add here.
1. I am a SAHM.
2. Just one so far. Number two is on the way!!!
3. NE Texas!!!
4. We plan to home-school when the time comes.
5. Religious and the clear lack of quality education in the area.
6. Sadly, I was not homeschooled, but DH was so he is very supportive.
7. The freedom of schedule, and the ability to use out-of-the box education methods, since I always seemed to learn better this way.
I am so excited about this board!!!!
What do you do? SAHM
How many kids do you have? 1 with the 2nd due in May
Where region/area are you from? West Michigan
Are you currently homeschooling or do you plan to in the future? Plan to in the future. Right now we are doing a little "tot school" although until I read it here I didn't know that term and was calling it "fake school".
What are your reasons for choosing to homeschool? We have a lot of reasons. A couple of our top reasons are encouraging a love of learning and teaching our kids how to question things.
Were you homeschooled? Both DH and I were from preK-12.
What do you like most about homeschooling? I love being able to watch DS learn.
How many kids do you have? four
Where region/area are you from? Ohio
Are you currently homeschooling or do you plan to in the future? We are currently homeschooling DS1, but he is not officially registered. Compulsory school age in Ohio is 6.
What are your reasons for choosing to homeschool?DS1 has anaphylactic food allergies and I don't trust anyone else around him with food. Even family members have messed up before. Our faith is also very important to us and homeschooling allows us to make it the primary focus of our childrens' educations. I also do not like the idea of complete strangers having that much control over my child's developing mind.
Were you homeschooled? No. Public-schooled
What do you like most about homeschooling?Freedom to fit school around our family schedule. Freedom to choose how and when we will learn. Mainly, I love that with homeschooling your life becomes about learning - we view everything as an opportunity to learn. Everything we do together as a family serves a purpose in their educations.
What do you do? I work part-time in a grocery store, around DH's and my mom's schedules.
How many kids do you have? just one for now; she will be 18m on Friday!
Where region/area are you from? Indiana
Are you currently homeschooling or do you plan to in the future? plan to when DD is school age
What are your reasons for choosing to homeschool? several-religious/faith reasons, poor quality of public schools in the area, knowing my kid(s) will be safe and knowing what they will be learning.
Were you homeschooled? no, although my parents considered it. DH was homeschooled from upper elementary on.
What do you like most about homeschooling? the opportunity for more hands-on learning and less wasted time in the day.
Add anything else you want to add here.
What do you do? sahm
How many kids do you have? 1 and another on the way
Where region/area are you from? Virginia
Are you currently homeschooling or do you plan to in the future? I try to teach my daughter now but i guess you can't really call it "homeschooling." Certainly plan to.
What are your reasons for choosing to homeschool? More one-on-one, can teach at my child's pace and I feel every child learns differently so I can teach my child (and future children) in the way that they learn best. I'm not really into the 'sit down and do paperwork and testing' kind of learning. I do feel that more hands on activities would be much better. I struggled in school (although now I feel I know more that i'm an adult and have had to learn things hand on). I feel I would have done better if things were more hands on and I always felt too much pressure with the number of tests and grades. Also spending hours in school and then hours on homework when you get home seems ridiculous to me. I feel we can get all of our homeschooling done in a shorter time and even understand it better in that time.
Were you homeschooled? No
What do you like most about homeschooling? I've always wanted to be a teacher and even went to college for early childhood education. But what's better than gettin to teach me own children?
How many kids do you have? Bun in the oven, 38 weeks.
Where region/area are you from? From California, live in West Virginia right now.
Are you currently homeschooling or do you plan to in the future? I plan to for sure.
What are your reasons for choosing to homeschool? These schools out here are very bad, both with test scores and with the way teachers teach.
Were you homeschooled? For a year in middle school.
What do you like most about homeschooling? I like the fact that now some places offer homeschooled kids to participate in school sports teams. I like the fact that I can spend more time with science and math than what public schools offer. I can teach my children about global history instead of regional history.
Add anything else you want to add here.
I do not like the fact that I cannot find any secular homeschooling groups out here, nor can I find any secular homeschooling information.
I'm late to this game but the thread is still on the front page... I'm so excited this group exists!
What do you do? I'm a Montessori teacher right now, but will be "retiring" after this school year in order to take care of my baby and hopefully start an in-home school program.
How many kids do you have? One on the way!
Where region/area are you from? DC metro
Are you currently homeschooling or do you plan to in the future? Not currently, but plan to start as soon as my children arrive!
What are your reasons for choosing to homeschool? I have the training and resources to do so, and I believe it is the best method for my children. We also would have a hard time affording private education, and I do not agree with public education at all. And to be honest, I'm really picky. With homeschool, I can do things exactly the way that I want and don't have to worry about what my kids are learning/doing when I'm not around.
Were you homeschooled? Yes, through 5th grade, and supplementarily to public school after that.
What do you like most about homeschooling? The freedom to do what works for me and my children, and the ability to be there to witness the learning and growth on a day to day basis.
I'd love to connect with any other homeschooling moms who are interested! I'm looking forward to hanging out on this board!
#2 3/2015
#3 3/2017
#4 10/2019
What do you do? work at a homeless shelter
How many kids do you have? none, but I like planning ahead. We plan to TTC next year.
Where region/area are you from? DC metro
Are you currently homeschooling or do you plan to in the future? future
What are your reasons for choosing to homeschool? Practicality- we will likely live in many countries/areas as our children grow up. I also have always wondered what my life would be like if I were really given an opportunity to learn and explore things I was interested in... I spent many years bored to tears in public school.
Were you homeschooled? No, husband and I are both 100% products of the public school system.
What do you like most about homeschooling? I don't have a real answer yet, but I'm looking forward to re-learning...subjects like US History and Biology are a blur!
chart.
What do you do? I am a full time Elementary Education Student(third year), part time Pre-Kindergarten assistant teacher, though I am taking a year off(possibly longer depending on homeschooling since it's a new idea) from the teaching, and switching to online courses.
How many kids do you have? Just one: Basil who is almost 4 years old. We wanted three before we had her, and are pretty sure she will be our only child now. She is a great kid, but very spirited and parenting is a lot harder than my naive idealistic 20 year old self thought before I had her. Hahaha!
Where region/area are you from? My husband is from the East Coast (NJ), and I am from Arizona originally. We have lived in the Pacific NW (WA-OR) for about 8 years, specifically in Portland, Oregon for the last three years, and planning on staying here permanently.
Are you currently homeschooling or do you plan to in the future? Basil has attended a Reggio Emilia inspired pre-school for the last two years, but due to a steep raise in tuition, the next year will be spent at home in a form of "unschooling" but preparing for Kindergarten, and we are looking into the possibility of homeschooling for at least elementary school.
What are your reasons for choosing to homeschool? We are looking into homeschooling as an option because the school she would go to is terrible, and it is seeming like a better option for our family than moving into a much more expensive neighborhood to get her into a better school. Especially when the "better" schools here are still not exactly what I see as well rounded arts-nature based education we are into. I love the Reggio Emilia school she went to, though her specific classroom lacked a bit I think, and would like to do something like that at home.
Were you homeschooled? No. My older siblings were home-schooled through elementary due to behavioral issues (they were adopted as older children from a REALLY bad situation. But after years of working with the three of them, my poor mother was tired and made the decision to send me to traditional public school.
What do you like most about homeschooling? I like the idea of being able to center Basil's schooling around a more natural type of learning style. We are a very art centered family, and would like to center her schooling around that.
Add anything else you want to add here. We are very new to this idea, so are looking into the different styles and curriculum, so any advice would be welcome. We are not religious, and so prefer a secular curriculum. Starting out fior the first year (Kingy) I want to buy a packaged curriculum to base things off, and then will reassess at a later date. We are interested in the styles similar to Waldorf-montessori-reggio but are open to more traditional styles as well.Y
