white amoxicillin

So we are on round 2 of ear infections & have been upgraded, lol, from pink to white amoxicillin. What has been your experience with side effects?

We were told for him to eat yogurt b/c it might upset his stomach & be prepared for diarrhea. The warning label said diarrhea can last for months??

Re: white amoxicillin

  • My recollection is that the white stuff is amoxicillin is blended with something else to make it more effective.  I can't remember what the "something else" is though.  G had diarrhea, but nothing too horrible.  Akin to eating too many oranges or other fruit, and once she stopped the antibiotics, her bowels went back to normal.  But otherwise, I don't remember any horrible side effects.

Good heavens, the Big D for months?!?  That's a scary thought.

Hope the ear infection clears up soon.

  • By white amoxicillin do you mean Augmentin?

its two drugs mixed together.  We were on it in January for a persistent ear infection in A.  During the antibiotics yeah he had some pretty impressive diarrhea, but once we stopped antibiotics it returned to normal. He loves yogurt so we were giving him greek yogurt and a daily probiotic tablet for kids.  I continued both for a couple weeks after the antibiotics were done though. No diarrhea for months for us.  Hope DS feels better soon!

  • I just finished amoxicillan, pink pills, for bronchitis and one of the side effects said diarrhea could last months. I haven't had any issues though.

When ds was on augmentin last year he had bad diarrhea, but it stopped after he stopped the meds.

  • Augmentin can be upsetting to the tummy.  I have a few mommy friends IRL whose LO's have vomited right after taking it if their stomachs were empty.  O has been on it a couple of times for stubborn ear infections.  Similar to PP's he had some nasty diapers while he was on it but as soon as we stopped the medication, so did the diarrhea.

  • ok - what a relief to know he's not going to have diarrhea for months!

The pedi said hse was giving Augmentin, but the bottle says it's a mix of Amoxicillin & something else, so I guess it's just a generic version.

  • It's mixed with Clavulanic acid.  I remember b/c I had a crazy allergic reaction when I was a teenager.  (But I was allergic to penicillin and we just didn't know it so please don't worry!)  I 2nd the probiotics.  We used Florastor during our ear infection/antibiotic crazy times.  Hope A's feeling better soon!

  • DS was given that kind from the get-go when he had an ear infection. I didn't even realize that the two different colors indicated different strength. We noticed no side effects. He didn't even have yogurt while he was on it because we didn't know about that recommendation. DS LOVED the medicine, btw.

  • I have no advice for your LO but MAN I got bad diarrhea from antibiotics can't remember if it was amoxicillin or not that lasted almost 6 weeks. Ughh, it was terrible. My doctor told me to take probiotic supplements. Can't remember the name but it was a powder.
