Babies: 6 - 9 Months

8 month old gagging on solids

Hello,

My 8 month old has never had any problems eating until recently. He has started gagging on oatmeal and any veggie or meat that has a texture. Since this is new  to me I am not sure if he doesn't like the oatmeal and certain foods, or if this is just something that happens from time to time in babies.

Do I keep trying it? Stop offering it to him? Is this a sign for a future picky eater? I have tried the ole' hide the food with other food trick and he's still gagging.

Any advice and tips would help me greatly.

Thanks.

  • I'm not suggesting this for you as I'm sure you are happy with what you are doing but we have done Baby Led Weaning. It is kind of the opposite of traditional baby food because it teaches kids to chew and move food in their mouths first and then how to actually eat it. That has really helped us with gagging. It just doesn't happen because he has learned (it took about 2 months) how to chew his food, get it where he needs it in his mouth and then swallow. I'm REALLY happy with it! Its a completely different (and cheaper) way to teach baby to eat solids and you get to avoid some gagging and purees flying around!
