Co-sleeping with reflux?

DD has reflux issues. She sleeps in her rnp overnight beside the bed, but usually after her last feeding (which can be anytime between 5am-7am), she will only go back to sleep if she is in my arms. If she goes back to sleep, we can both get an extra 1.5-2 hours. I enjoy co-sleeping, and we are safe about it. Due to her reflux though, she will sometimes spit up or will start coughing due to lying flat. I try to prop her head up on my arm to at least keep her head elevated, which seems to help somewhat, but I was wondering if anyone else had any experience with this and what you tried, or what worked for you.

Thanks!

Re: Co-sleeping with reflux?

  • We had this issue in the beginning with DS.  The Rock N Play was a lifesaver, for sure, but sometimes he still needed to be by me.  I tried putting him in the crook of my arm and a few other ways of positioning him somewhat upright, but he didn't like any of that so we just dealt with the spit up during those times.  I got a FuzziBuns waterproof fleece mattress pad (it is fleecy but not padded) and put that under both of us to catch the mess.  That helped a lot, and he outgrew the worst of the spitting up by 5-6 months.

  • My DD has reflux and we co sleep. Usually I hold her upright for at least 10 minutes then she has her head on my arm but lays on her side. Works great for us, and the pedi said that laying on the left side helps reflux babies stomachs settle.

  • As a PP replied, we just dealt with the spitting up. DS slept right through the spitting up. We'd both sleep on a large towel and have a spare at the bedside for when he inevitably had extra big spit ups. He's "growing out of" the reflux now at almost 5 months and rarely spits up.

  • I'm dealing with the same thing right now.... I burp LO multiple times during a feeding and then lie her on her stomach on top of my chest while I am propped up a bit.... This really seems to help her. After she falls asleep I'll lay her on her back in the crook of my arm. GL
