Anyone still dealing with tailbone pain from labor?

DS was born in April 2011 and I broke my tailbone in the process of pushing him out. I saw a chiropractor for over a year after he was born and it helped significantly. But it's been almost 23 months now and I still can't sit in a meeting at work without being in pain when I get up. I have a wedge pillow permanently placed in my desk chair. At home, I like to work in bed sometimes, but am always in a bit of pain when I get up.

Anyone else still feeling pain after a couple of years? I'm due with #2 in May and am expecting to have tailbone issues again. I'm thinking of going down to Duke to see a specialist at some point if so.

  • I have had a couple friends that had to have OB physical therapy for this.  The PT actually has to via the rectum to adjust the tailbone, but neither of them ever had to go back.  GL, that would be awful!

  • I had a tailbone issue back in high school (not pregnancy related) and it took almost two years for me to be completely normal, and all I did was ride a bike with a boy seat for 8 miles. My chiropractor helped a bit but honestly it just takes time. Mine wasn't broken, just severely bruised, but I was told if it had been broken, surgery to remove the broken piece would leave me with worse pain than I already had. I've delt with bulging discs in my lower back while pregnant and it's no picnic, so I can;t imagine the pain of a broken tail bone. Hope you can find relief. My mother swears by her acupuncturist for pain, so perhaps try that next.

I'm lurking, but just want to say that this happened to me. The PT told me that the coccyx (like the actual tailbone) can move when you're pushing. She had to go in and move it with her finger (fairly awkward and quite painful). I started going about 6 weeks post partum. Had about 10 visits plus some exercises at home. It stopped hurting completely maybe 5 or 6 months post partum. It was pretty terrible, but did resolve itself finally.

So, you really should see a physical therapist!

are you in richmond by chance? if so, i have been seeing a women's health PT she is very good. I have had similar issues (back, SI joint etc) from/during my pregnancies.
  • I am sooooo glad to read this post.  My husband thinks I'm nuts!  I had a feeling it was related to child birth.  My son is 18 mos, and after I sit for a period of time, it hurts, A LOT!!!  to get up!  It's definitely right where my tailbone is.  Could I have broken it during labor?  I had a rough birth, and a terrible epiziotome (sp)?  I can feel it now, and when I get up, it will hurt like crazy!!!!   What's the cure????
