Cotillion?

Anyone else planning to have their kids do this when they're older?

Re: Cotillion?

  • Scratch what I wrote...

ETA-- I just looked up the National League of Junior Cotillions and it's something totally different. LOL It's most like manners class? DD just finished 6 weeks of manners class taught by her teacher {these were after school} yesterday with a tea party at the local country club. She has a blast. They covered things like table manners, thank you notes, appearance, introductions, etc. I'd like her to take a more in-depth class when she gets a little older, but this was a fun opener.

  • I had to do Cotillian as a kid and haaaated it. This was in Southern CA, and most people I know did it. I had to wear white gloves and I was always getting reprimanded for not removing them correctly.

We aren't having our kids do it because A I don't know anyone here who does and B I don't think learning the fox trot is all that important. Manners I can teach on my own.

  • Not unless the school holds something similar. The high school I went to did something very similar to what Kate described and it was a lot of fun. Otherwise, cotillions were/are unheard of where I grew up.

  • Yes, we are. DH and I both did it. It's kind of one of those rite of passage events down here growing up.

  • Hmm...I'm not sure if everyone else's cotillion is the same thing as what I'm talking about, based on the responses. Here it's like what Kate said, an etiquette class. Nobody gets "presented" or anything like that. There's some dance involved (I agree, learning the foxtrot seems dumb but that's part of it) but mostly it focuses on table manners, what to do when you're introduced to someone, polite conversation, etc. My niece and nephew did it and it was very cool, they learned some really valuable things. A ton of kids from their school did it with them, and it's not a private school or anything.
  • Here, it's a program involving etiquette and ballroom dancing lessons for middle school aged children from the local private schools. At the end, there is a ball complete with call outs for the kids who went through it. Parents come and take beaucoup pics.

  • We don't have that around here.

There are debutant balls in NYC, but we don't run in those circles.......

That's kind of what we do with ballroom classes here...but it's younger. 5th or 6th grade.

Now, we {like Mobile I'm sure} also have a number of debutante balls for both high school and college age girls. Completely different.

Oh yeah, the deb balls are an entirely different league here too.

I took classes like that in 6th and 7th grade at the country club.

i don't know if I'll send my kids.  They are boys, so they would probably hate it.

But probably need it the most! I think all boys should do it.

I'm still amazed by the Mardi Gras queens dress this year. Wowza!

LOL, this is exactly what I was going to say. I almost want mine to do it more because they're boys. Girls seem to pick it up more on their own.

My nephew balked at first, but then he realized a bunch of his friends were doing it, too, and he wound up having fun. For us, it's offered through a local arts center and it stars in 3rd/4th grade. You can do it through 8th grade, if you want. It's only like 6 weeks a year, one hour a week. I can't imagine it's that bad.

I know! My MIL was queen of her organization in 2009, and I got to see how they design and make the trains and go shopping with her for a crown. Makes me want one of my own. I could rock that thing doing housework, no?

  • Nope, I've never met someone who did a cotillion. I don't think it's popular in my area.

I would love for DD to do something like that for that amount of time. I think you learn some important skills that a lot of people are lacking in this day and age.

A friend of a friend's sister was queen this year and she wore Vera Wang!! I need to do anything that would give me a chance to wear VW more than once {wedding} in my life!

  • A lot of my friends did growing up. I went as visitor once. DH and I are not the cotillion type....but I would kind of like my children to learn the fox trot!
