Parenting after a Loss

Back to the ped this afternoon..

DS is still sick.  And, not just a little cough.. he's still super congested and his cough is absolutely horrible.  The wheezing has improved, but definitely is there whenever he's had a coughing fit.

My Mom actually said he was scaring her this morning because he was coughing so hard and not breathing.. his cough went from a very wet, loose cough.. to a very wet TIGHT cough.

Fevers are still sporadic.  I haven't temped one since Tuesday, but there are several times in the MOTN that he'll wake screaming (as he's been up every hour for the past 11 nights) and he'll be absolutely soaked in sweat.. which, makes me think a fever has broken?

I get that colds take time.. but, I just feel like 11 days is a long time for him to be this sick.  Am I right?  Or, am I just being impatient?  When DH took him to the ped last Tuesday to follow up from the ER, she didn't say anything about time frame on when he should be feeling better.. just that it was viral, and to continue with the nebulizer treatments while he's wheezy.

I'm so exhausted.. I can't take seeing him sick anymore :(

  • I'm sorry that your little guy is sick.

While the doctor in the ER is correct, if it is a virus it could linger, I would definitely take him to his pediatrician. I am a pediatric nurse and can tell you that RSV has been rampant this year. What concerns me most about your story is when you say that he is coughing so hard and not breathing. Did they swab him for RSV when he was in the emergency room? While there is no "cure" for RSV, he may need to have some oxygen support. Is he still eating? Having good wet diapers? Also, what is in the nebs you are giving him---are they just saline or are they albuterol? How often are you giving the nebs to him?

We had taken him to the ped initially 2 days after going to the ER (that's what the ER doc suggested).. but, she basically had just said continue with the nebulizer treatments, and that it was viral and should clear up on it's own.. that was last Tuesday.  They did not swab him for RSV in the ER or in our peds office.  He is on albuterol for the neb treatments.. the ER had told us every 4 hours, and that's what we were doing for the first few days, but only had 4 days supply of albuterol, so the last couple days we backed off and were just doing 3 treatments a day, and then 2, trying to stretch the meds, since the ped didn't give us more when we followed up.

We took him back to the ped today.. she put him on antibiotics.  She said his sinuses are so swollen, that it's hard to tell if there's an infection, but she's pretty certain the cough is just from all the congestion pouring into his chest.  His one ear was really inflamed, too, which she said could be an ear infection, but his ear canals are so tiny still, so again, she had a hard time knowing for sure.. I'm not a doctor, but she was saying she can still see a bit of light in there, which means it's not completely swollen, but swollen enough for concern.. she also told us to go back to 4x/day with the albuterol and if he's not improved in 48 hours to come back.
