I am just now 14 weeks with baby #4! WHOO HOO! We have a Graco SureFit Carseat that was purchased in 2008 and we've used with 3 of our children. Do you think I can use it for #4 OR does anyone know a site I can check on this?
Check the bottom of the car seat. There may be a sticker there with a date of manufacture which are said to be safe for 10 years after. You may want to check for recalls though. The bottom may also have an expiration date which some car seats have.

If its not on the bottom, check the sides. All carseats expire after 7 years I believe. If it has been in an accident or exposed to extreme temps (left in the garage during the summer then in the winter) the plastic could weaken causing it to fail in case of an accident or sudden jolt.
ETA: Just do a quick google search on carseat expirations
THIS. Now that I am thinking about it that is why we had to buy two new infant seats instead of one. The one we used for DD and DS was manufacutred in 2009 which would make it good until 2014 but I didnt want to have to use it for a few months and end up buying a second new one in the end.
car seats are something you dont want to mess with. they are designed to keep your child safe in an accident occurs. after x number of years manufactures say the plastic wears down things come loose etc. if your in an accident you want to make sure the car seat will protect your child.
also , if a car seat has been involved in an accident then they are void and considered unusable because parts shift etc. and deemed no longer safe. I'm pretty sure insurance covers a new car seat.
im all into used stuff off craigslist etc but its recommended not to buy used carseat (if u dont know the history) also some people say crib because the older they are and put together/taken apart the less sturdy they become.
