Toddlers: 24 Months+

Woke at 2am and refused to go back down...help??

My normal, happy sleeping todder woke up at 2am this morning and was WIDE awake!  My DH was up with him while I kept sleeping (yea, I feel like sh*t).  This is VERY abnormal for him...last time he did this was his newborn days.  I think I pretty much have the reasons pegged down, but just wanted some other thoughts and opinions.

My son normally naps and does at daycare, but he has been fighting us at home on the weekends now and didn't nap all weekend long.  Now Saturday night when the time changed he went to bed around 8:30pm and didn't wake until 7:35am...no problem there.  Although on Saturday we really wore him out...we were finally able to get outside and play and we went out to dinner that night which is rare b/c he has been so bad lately that we've been ordering in.  We decided to take the chance and glad we did...he was perfectly behaved!

Yesterday his cousin had a bday party at noon at one of those indoor fun places.  He totally missed his nap AGAIN and was running around like a wild man in there.  We got home around 2:30 and he sat in the recliner and passed out and slept from like 4-5 and then we had to wake him up to go eat dinner at my parents (normal Sunday thing).  He was fine, but grumpy and never ate dinner at all!  Ran around outside like a wild child...lol.

We got home fed him some oatmeal, only thing he was asking for, this is normal too...he normally gets some before bed.

Gave him a bath and read books and put him straight to bed.  Although he is use to getting a bath early then going downstairs to unwind and eat his oatmeal then we go up stairs.  Last night it was already too late to do that...we had to go straight to bed.

Then he woke up at 2am and was crying...never went back to bed at all!  Fell asleep in his carseat this morning in less than 5 min on the way to day care.  :(  Poor thing!  No fever and no signs of sickness...yet.

Do you just think it was the over-stimulation, over-tiredness, off routine and time change that could have caused all of this.  Also him not wanting any dinner?  I just hope things go back to normal today/tonight!!!

Help me out with your opinions if you can please?

  • I think if you are only dealing with one night of bad sleeping....I wouldn't start to worry.  We skipped the nap yesterday too in hopes of getting a decent bedtime.  However, LO fell asleep in the car around 5:00.  I think that late, short nap threw everything off.  Maybe it was the late nap for you too!?

  • I wouldn't worry about it either. My son has good nights (rarely) where he sleeps straight through in his own bed. And he has "bad" nights (usually) where he gets up at 2 am and wants to sleep with us. You never know if he is coming down with something or just not feeling himself. I recommend hugs and kisses!

Yes. LO won't eat if she's tired. She's always been like that. And when she's overly tired, she sleeps horribly.

  • Hello, everyone my son is 2 years and 6 month and he is a very bad sleeper We don't know what to do anymore to get him to sleep.
  • When my dd sleeps late in the afternoon she wakes up grumpy, doesn't eat dinner and wakes in the night too
So we either do a 1pm nap or keep her up for an early bedtime
