Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Self-weaning at 17 mths...

Hello all,

Question about a toddler self-weaning.  My DD is 17mths and still nurses some mornings but not at any other time of the day.  I let her decide whether to nurse or just get up to start the day and lately, more times than not, we just start the day.

However, on days she decides to nurse, is there any harm or consequence to letting her feed?  I am still producing milk, although not as much as even a month ago, due to her not nursing as much.

I would prefer for her to continue the self-weaning but on the other hand, if it is not good for her to once in a while nurse, then I'll stop her all together.

Thanks in advance ladies...

  • I don't see any harm in continuing as long as you both are amenable to it. :)

  • there is absolutely no drawback to letting her nurse when she wants!
  • No harm! It is great that you are still breastfeeding. As the feedings are dwindling down, your milk is becoming more concentrated with protective antibodies. My son stopped abruptly at 21 months just this week but I was planning to keep offering him the chance at night before bed and when he woke until he refused.

  • Thanks so much ladies.  Glad to know it's up to her with no repercussions!
