Toddlers: 24 Months+

Now I'm concerned about DD's weight

I'm on the 6-9 month board and there are kids that are almost the same weight as my 2 1/2 year old.  She's always been tiny, between 0-3%.  I thought my son was a chubster at 16.5 lbs and he's not.  DD is about 22.5 lbs.  Is there anyone out there that has a kid about the same age and about the same weight, give or take? She's never been a great eater, but she does eat every day. She just eats fruit and veggies which have no calories or fat. Doctor has never been really concerned but now she's due for another visit and she's only gained like 1.5 lbs in 6 months.

Re: Now I'm concerned about DD's weight

  • DS turned 3 last month and has been hovering at 29 to 30lbs. Last summer he was about 25lbs. He's slowly gained and always been around the 5th percentile. My ped could really care less about specific numbers and really looks more at his general health status.

  • Lurking here, but saw this post and it made me think of my oldest. At 20 months he weighs 23 pounds, I know that from weighing him at home since I worry about his weight. He has been in the 3% the last few visits to the ped, but at one point he was in the 50%... like you, my son just loves to eat fruit and veggies, and is constantly moving. Our ped isn't worried about him, but I can't help but be, when his 6 month old brother weighs 5 lbs less than him.

  • 1.5 pounds in 6 months is totally normal for a 2 year old.  Sounds like she's just small!  As long as she acts healthy and happy, I wouldn't worry :)
  • My 3 1/2 yr old is 26 lbs. She is just petite, as are her dad and I. The pedi isn't worried b/c she eats a balanced diet, is healthy, and is just going to be on the smaller side. Now my DS, he's 13 lbs at 3mo!

  • As long as she isn't losing I would think she is fine.  My two boys have always been about 5-8lbs apart.  They are a little over 2 years apart.

  • Sounds to me like she is just small...weight gain slows down big time by age two I think, my kids gained very little from 2 1/2 to 3 1/2...

Does she only eat fruits and veggies though? I would maybe think about seeing a nutritionist for ideas on ways to get protein and calcium in her diet if that is the case.

  • I don't remember what DD weighed at that age, but at 6.5 she is still under 40lbs (hovering around 37.5lbs). She is just petite with very fine bone structure, but she skis, bikes, roller skates, jump ropes, and plays soccer with the best of them :)

As others have said, as long as she is active, healthy, and happy (and not significantly dropping on her growth curve) I wouldn't be concerned.

  • Emma is 26 months and 21lbs. she's a picky eater and doesn't eat much. My pediatrician wants her to gain weight, but she still doesn't. There's not much you really can do. I try Pediasure and she will NOT touch it. The best I can do is to keep trying. She wouldn't touch strawberry until last week, so we'll see.

I even tried to mix milk and Pediasure and she flipped out lol.  She's so damn stubborn!!

Thanks everyone.  I try to look at genetics and there are a lot of super petite people on both sides of the family.

  • Mine wouldn't drink milk from a cup, just a bottle. Her pediatrician took her off milk due to an allergy and all she drinks is water and an occasional juice box....she lost a lb. She's picky and stubborn and drives me crazy
